In what is fast becoming a crowded market for retired cricketers, the Asian Legends T20 League aims to captivate an audience with some attractive signings and a slick format. Organized by the World Sports Group, the tournament will be held from March 16-24 and will feature players from five teams: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.
The team names are Indian Royals, Sri Lankan Lions, Afghanistan Pathans, Bangladesh Tigers, and Pakistan Stars. The inaugural edition will be held at the Rangiri International Stadium in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. There will be 10 group games, followed by five playoff matches, including the grand finale.
The league commissioner is Chetan Sharma, a former India all-rounder who, until recently, was the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee.
The organizers hope to rekindle the nostalgia factor among the fans who will get an opportunity to see their favourite stars of yesteryears in action. This presents a wonderful opportunity for them to wager on the tournament.
The important factor here to be considered is team strength, by which you should be picking those teams consisting of players that have recently retired and are fit.
The other vital aspect to consider is the pitches. Dambulla is traditionally known to produce slower surfaces that can make stroke-making challenging at times. But having not hosted top-tier cricket for a while, it’s likely the surfaces will be fresh and aid good bounce and carry.
Use discretion, rely on instincts, and follow all legal obligations to ensure your betting experience is memorable and safe. Pick a licensed sportsbook to make it easy for yourself. Set betting limits to protect your capital, which will allow you to play responsibly.
The Captains & An Overview
Irfan Pathan, a veteran of the retired circuit, is set to lead Indian Royals. The former India allrounder has been an active part of the Legends League, US T10, and Road Safety Series, as well as a few franchise tournaments, such as the Lanka Premier League, since his retirement. He’s also a noted commentator and studio expert these days. Apart from his cricket commitments, Irfan runs an academy along with his brother, Yusuf Pathan.
Upul Tharanga will lead Sri Lankan Lions. The former opener is currently also chairman of Sri Lanka’s senior men's selection committee, having taken over following an overhaul of the selection structure in the wake of a dismal 2023 World Cup campaign, where they won only two games and also missed qualifying for next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan. In his heyday, Tharanga was a destructive opener who hit 15 ODI hundreds in a career that spanned over 200 matches.
Asghar Afghan will lead the Afghanistan Pathans. The 36-year-old retired from all formats of the game following the team’s campaign at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Australia. He’s, however, closely associated with the pathway programs and coaching structures in the country. Afghan is known for being a fearless captain who instilled aggression into a young team. He led the country to their first-ever Test win in 2019 over Ireland. In 2021 he recorded a career-best 164 in a fourth wicket stand of 307 with Hashmatullah Shahidi, then the highest partnership for any wicket in Tests for Afghanistan.
Mohammad Ashraful has been roped in as Bangladesh’s captain and icon player. The former batter broke through as a teenage star but found himself in a mess after being embroiled in a match-fixing controversy that led to him being banned from the game. A veteran of 61 Tests, Ashraful hit six Test centuries and also captained the national team post the 2007 World Cup, but eventually lost his job to Mashrafe Mortaza. Ashraful remains a batting enigma and at his peak, was a thrilling batter to watch.
Pakistan Stars will be spearheaded by the seven-foot-tall Mohammad Irfan. The 41-year-old had the ability to marry pace with disconcerting bounce thanks to his height and troubled batters the world over, particularly in the white-ball formats. Irfan was a key member of Misbah-ul-Haq’s side during the mid-2010s. He last played for Pakistan in T20Is in 2019. Overall, he picked up 83 wickets in 60 ODIs and 16 wickets in 22 T20Is. His spell against India during their 2012-13 series in India remains among his most memorable.
Factors To Consider Before Betting
Unlike traditional bets on international games, this is a league for retired stars. This makes it that much more open since players from all teams are long retired from the game. Some, however, have played more recently than others, like Irfan Pathan, who is a regular. That could make a massive difference in terms of longevity on the field, being able to bat or bowl better, and, in general, steering away from rustiness.
Pick players who’ve retired more recently than others in your team, for they’re still in the groove. Also, consider the slow nature of the pitches in Dambulla for your wager. It means teams will have to recalibrate their scores. Totals in the range of 160 could be match-winning.
The absence of dew in Dambulla, in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, could hugely minimize the advantage the toss can offer.
Popular Bets
Match Winner
In a contest between two teams, you simply pick a winner without delving deep into the technicalities. Surface-level knowledge should be enough to help you wager on this.
Most Runs/Wickets
This will, of course, require some research on player form, fitness, and recent history. But in a league for retired stars, everyone starts on an even footing. Ensure you pick a strong middle-order batter, preferably someone who bats in the top four, to help maximize points. On the bowling front, former players tend to conserve themselves, so they’re mostly down on pace. This makes it a viable prospect to pick spinners over fast bowlers.
Legal & Responsible Betting
This doesn’t need any more reaffirmation, but please do factor in limiting the size of your wager, like a stop loss, to ensure you don’t go overboard. Play responsibly and only from trusted sportsbooks, of which there are plenty. Use one of the many attractive sign-up incentives they offer to pick yours.
