Australia vs India Preview

A little over a year from their showdown in the ICC ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad, Australia and India will go again in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai on Tuesday. Both teams are unbeaten in this tournament so far but have entered this semi-final with contrasting form.

India have breezed their way into the semis, with three wins in three matches. Australia have only played one completed match, against England, with the other two matches being washed out.

While India will start as favourites, particularly on a pitch that spun considerably on Sunday in their match against New Zealand, there will be a bit of a hangover from the final in Ahmedabad. On paper, at least, India look like a formidable team in these conditions.

Australia Form

In terms of form, Australia are looking good. They beat England in a massive chase before a rained out match against South Africa. Australia were looking set for a comfortable win against Afghanistan before rain intervened in Lahore in the second innings, with their score at 109 for 1.

Australia will rely heavily on their batters in this match, particularly the experienced players like Steven Smith and Travis Head. They will have to find a way to cause enough disruption to India’s bowlers on a pitch that will likely be slow and sluggish.

"We've obviously had a bit of a hectic schedule, playing a couple of games in Pakistan, back and forth in between cities, but I think with the nature of this tournament," Adam Zampa said. "Potentially slower lower wickets, so there might be an opportunity to create a few more chances, we'll see."

Australia Team News

Matthew Short has been ruled out of the tournament with a quad injury, with Cooper Connolly called up to replace him. Australia may need additional spin-bowling options for this Dubai pitch too.

India Form

India were excellent in their previous game despite posting just 249 for 9 against New Zealand. Shreyas Iyer scored 79 off 98 balls with four fours and two sixes while Hardik Pandya’s 45 off 45 balls carried India to a respectable total.

It was the spinners that turned the game around for India, led by Varun Chakravarthy’s 5 for 42. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja combined to take four wickets between them.

"In T20, my sequencing of balls - as in how I construct an over - is totally different compared to the 50-over format," Varun said. “And it really helped me to understand when I can bowl my incoming delivery or outgoing delivery or the straighter one or the top spin - whatever it is. It is completely different from what I do in the T20."

India Team News

India will likely stick with Chakravarthy for the semi-final, which could mean four spinners against a team that has struggled to face quality spin.

Verdict

India have looked the best team in this tournament as they did in the World Cup in 2023 until they came up against Australia. However, conditions are different here. Australia are without their best bowlers and some of their batters have been in concerning form. India will look to use their talent and skill to overcome Australia’s challenge successfully to make another ICC final.
