It’s been ten years since the memorable T20 World Cup, and Australia have embarked on another tour to Bangladesh. This time, it’s for six white-ball matches, three T20Is, and three ODIs, starting from March 22. The T20 World Cup will be played in Bangladesh this September-October.
This gives plenty of context to the current series, for it’s an opportunity for Bangladesh to test themselves against the world’s best while Australia have a chance to acclimatize to the weather and spin-friendly conditions in the run-up to their title defence.
The series will be compelling to bet on for a number of reasons:
1. It features some of the global superstars of the women’s game - Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney, among others.
2. Bangladesh are a much-improved team especially in their home conditions, which should make the series interesting.
3. Bangladesh have experienced recent success against India, Pakistan and South Africa. And would want to extend that record against the world champions
4. Australia have never played in an ODI against Bangladesh in Bangladesh. This makes it a first on many counts, not least the conditions that will have a massive impact.
5. A series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh’s men’s team has already been played in Dhaka, and the surfaces could take a turn because they’ve been used a fair bit. It will be interesting to see how Australia adapts.
The Rivalry - An Overview
There isn’t really a rivalry to speak of just yet. This will be the first-ever ODI series between the two countries. Their only previous meeting came earlier during the 50-overs World Cup in 2022 in New Zealand. Australia won that by five wickets.
The match was rain-reduced to 43 overs, with Bangladesh huffing and puffing to 135 for 6, with Lata Mondal top-scoring with 33. Australia slumped to 41 for 4, with Salma Khan removing Healy, Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning in quick succession. Beth Mooney then allayed fears of an Australian meltdown by hitting 66 not out to see them home in the 33rd over.
Captains & Squads - Brown Ruled Out; Jonassen Dropped
Australia will be led by Healy, who has taken over as the all-format captain following Meg Lanning’s retirement from international cricket. Bangladesh will be led by Nigar Sultana.
Australia won’t have the services of fast bowler Darcie Brown, who has been ruled out of the series. She was diagnosed with a left foot injury. Australia have chosen to replace her with spin-bowling allrounder Grace Harris, who was earlier part of just the T20I squad.
Harris has been in excellent form for UP Warriorz in the WPL. In eight innings, she hit 188 runs, primarily in the lower order. She also picked up four wickets with the ball.
The series also sees the return of fast bowler Layla Vlaminck, who has returned from shoulder surgery that came on the back of identical foot injuries. She hasn’t featured for Australia since January 2022 but could well break that drought in Bangladesh.
Also on a comeback trail is allrounder Sophie Molineux, who could feature in her first ODI since September 2021. Molineux had taken some time out following mental health issues. Her return was delayed post that due to an ACL injury.
She will head into the Bangladesh tour on the back of a title-winning run with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the WPL. It’s likely Molineux will replace Jess Jonassen, who has been left out of the squad for the first time since 2012.
It’s likely her international career could be at the crossroads. On her part, Jonassen has kept her options open and had a stellar run for Delhi Capitals, runners-up of WPL 2024.
Bangladesh Name Largely Settled Squad
Farzana Akter, the uncapped wicketkeeper, and 15-year-old Nishita Akter Nishi are two surprise inclusions in Bangladesh’s squad. Nishita Akter debuted in the series against Pakistan last year and is touted by many as a future prospect.
Shamima Sultana, the first-choice wicketkeeper until recently, has been left out, while Mondal and Shorifa Khatun have been named stand-by players. Nahida Akter will lead the pace battery, while Shorna Akter will lead the spin charge.
Popular Bets
Match Winner
There is not a lot of history between the two teams, but this much is clear. Australia have way too much experience for Bangladesh to pull off upsets.
It’s possible they may fight and push them hard, but a win seems a tad too far to bridge. So if you’ve to pick a match-winner between the two sides, bank on Australia to keep winning.
Boundary Count
A lot of importance has been attached to this parameter ever since the 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand was decided on a boundary count after scores were tied at the end of the Super Over.
Boundary count essentially is a count of which team hit more fours and sixes combined. There can be a few sub-categories under this bet, like which batter hit most fours in the game or how many powerplay boundaries either side hit in the series, etc.
Legal & Responsible Betting
In today’s day and age, where you have a world of choices to pick from, choose a reputed bookmaker to place your wager. Check for their authenticity, track record, sign-up bonuses, if any and terms and conditions, such as how long it takes for winning bonuses to be paid out.
The idea is to protect your capital and play responsibly, so you may want to consider keeping betting limits to ensure you’re never off the roads during any situation. Play safe, play well, play responsibly.
This will maximize not just your winning potential but also the prospect of you returning to the platform for future matches and tournaments.
