The tournament is organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, with each team representing its respective regional and state cricket associations.
The championship was founded in 1934 and has since been held across various prominent cricket grounds and stadiums across India.
Currently, the tournament is played by 38 teams, with each country’s 28 states fielding at least one team.
Four of the country’s eight union territories also participate in the Ranji Trophy, known by many as The Cricket Championship of India and named after Ranjitsinhji, the first Indian cricket player to play internationally.
The Mumbai cricket team has historically been the single most successful team across the tournament, winning 41 times.
The storied history of the tournament has given it a special place in the hearts of millions of Indian sports fans, who view it as the purest form of domestic cricket away from the glamour and extravagance of the IPL.
About the Ranji Trophy
A.S. De Mello, the founder of the BCCI, first proposed the idea of a national-level first-class cricket championship. The first edition flagged off Shimla in July 1934, and the first fixtures were held between 1934-35.
Initially, the tournament was named ‘The cricket championship of India’ before it was eventually renamed to honour Ranjitsinhji, after Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala donated a trophy in memory of Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji.
In its present form, the tournament is played by 38 teams split into five groups. Four of these groups are considered to be Elite, while the fifth is a ‘Plate Group’ consisting of six teams that play each other once, with the top four finishers being advanced to an elite group the following year.
Each team from the Elite group plays seven matches during the league stage. The top eight teams from across Elite groups then progress to the knockout stage, which consists of four quarter-final matches, two semi-finals, and a final match.
The two worst-performing sides from the 32 Elite teams will be relegated to the Plate Group for the next season.
Factors to Consider Before Betting on the Ranji Trophy
The Ranji Trophy is a favourite betting market across the Indian subcontinent, thanks to the long history and legacy of the tournament. If you’re eager to get in on this historic tournament’s betting action, here’s some crucial information to remember before placing your first punt on the Ranji Trophy.
Player Performance
If you plan on wagering on a particular player, remember to look into their recent performances and assess their current form.
Even if you have a gut feeling about wagering on a certain player, always check their recent performances to gauge the likelihood of how their form affects any potential wagers that you make.
Pitch and Weather Conditions
Weather conditions have a tremendous impact on the game of cricket, and it’s critical to try and foresee any adverse conditions before placing a bet.
Before the start of the game, study the weather report to understand if the match might be shortened or delayed due to rain or dew. It’s a good practice to hold off on your bet if you feel like the game might be affected by adverse weather.
Team Analysis
One of the most important factors to consider before placing a wager is the form factor of the team that you’re wagering on.
We encourage you not to rely solely on gut feelings or wager only on your favourite team to make more informed betting choices.
Before you bet on a team, remember to look into the team’s recent performances, current form and the quality of its captaincy.
Home Advantage
The home advantage can significantly affect the quality of a particular team’s game on a particular day. As with all sports, teams play better in front of their home crowd, so always factor in the home advantage before wagering on a player or team.
Popular Betting Markets
The structure and ruleset of cricket allow for several unique betting markets. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular Ranji Trophy betting markets below:
Match Winner
Also known as a Moneyline bet, as the name suggests, this bet is a straightforward wager on who you think will win a particular match.
The same strategies described above remain relevant while placing a match-winner bet, as it’s best to consider details like a key player’s form or recent team performances before making an educated guess as to who may win a game.
Runs
A rather popular bet type in cricket is to try and guess how many runs will be scored in total at the end of a game. Similar to a total bet in other sports, you can wager on both individual teams and overall total runs at the end of an inning. Tip: Some pitches allow for more runs than others, so always remember to factor in the location of a match before making a bet.
Top Bowler/Batsman
Similar to what some areas are known as player props, you can wager on who you think might be the best batsman or bowler in a Ranji Trophy Game.
The outcome of a match has no bearing on this bet type, as the top-scoring bowler could, on rare occasions, be from the losing side. The same holds true for bowlers with the highest wickets taken in a game, too.
Legality of Betting on The Ranji Trophy
Depending on where you live, remember to sign up only with licensed betting platforms that are authorised to operate in your jurisdiction. Signing up with licensed sportsbooks ensures that you will have a safe experience while placing wagers online.
