Harry Brook led England with another stellar century, 171 off 197 balls with 15 fours and three sixes, in yet another performance that showcased his talent as one of the world’s best young batters.

Brydon Carse took 10 wickets across both innings on a relatively placid surface at Hagley Oval to help England complete a tough win against a solid team.

Kane Williamson scored two half-centuries, including 93 in the first innings and 61 in the second. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips were the only other New Zealand batters to find fifty in either innings.

New Zealand Form

After a 3-0 series win in India, New Zealand returned home to a tough result against Ben Stokes’ England team that has transformed cricket in the last few years.

However, that loss won’t concern a confident team that much, particularly in home conditions where they have regularly found a way past tricky opponents.

New Zealand dropped eight catches in that first Test, including letting Brook off five times.

"We certainly put the work in behind the scenes, training days, that sort of thing. It certainly hasn't been a continuous thing that's been happening. It's just one of those games - sometimes when one goes down, they all keep falling. We like to stay nice and level and try not to over-emphasise things,” New Zealand captain Tom Latham said.

New Zealand Team News

Despite a tough opening loss, New Zealand may not tinker too much with their team going into Wellington.

England Form

England have plenty to look forward to, particularly with their young talent coming quickly through the ranks.

Apart from Brook, Jacob Bethell, who recently secured an IPL contract, scored 50 off 37 balls in the second innings to showcase he belongs in England’s Bazball style.

England have found reliable seam and swing bowlers after the retirements of Stuart Broad and James Anderson with Chris Woakes, Carse and Gus Atkinson rounding up a well-suited bowling unit for New Zealand conditions.

England Team News

England have named an unchanged team with Bethell holding his No. 3 spot, which means Ollie Pope will continue to keep wicket and bat at No. 6.

Verdict

New Zealand have often found a way to overcome obstacles over the course of a long series.

They now return to Wellington in windy conditions, where their swing bowlers will be better suited against a team that prefers to score quickly.

New Zealand should come storming back into the series with a typically resilient performance in Wellington.
