South Africa vs New Zealand Preview

The second semi-final of the Champions Trophy will see South Africa face New Zealand in Lahore for another shot at ICC silverware. South Africa were recent runners-up in the T20 World Cup last year while New Zealand will still be reeling from their 2019 ODI World Cup defeat in a dramatic final.

South Africa have had a clean run in this Champions Trophy so far. They have won two of their three games – against Afghanistan and England with the other match against Australia washed out in Rawalpindi.

New Zealand were terrific against Pakistan in the tournament opener and then beat Bangladesh to confirm their presence in the semi-final. They were, however, beaten by a resurgent India team in the final game of the group stage.

South Africa Form

South Africa don’t have too many concerns with their form, especially after a drubbing of England in the lead-up to this semi-final. Their bowling has been excellent, with Marco Jansen providing enough depth with the new ball while their batting has stood up to different challenges in this tournament already.

"Since I've been around from 2018, we have played some incredible cricket. We just had some bad luck here and there and one or two games that didn't go our way, but we've been playing good cricket. It's the rewards that we're seeing now,” Heinrich Klaasen said.

South Africa Team News

South Africa have had a tough travel schedule ahead of this semi. They had to travel to Dubai to prepare for a possible encounter against India but have now travelled back to Lahore in a whirlwind logistical nightmare. However, there aren’t too many injury concerns, only fatigue.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand have looked the real deal already in this tournament. They were terrific in the tournament opener, playing with zeal and discipline. That continued against Bangladesh. New Zealand will be particularly pleased that Kane Williamson found form with 81 against India after two single-digit scores to start the tournament.

From a bowling standpoint, New Zealand have been typically accurate. Matt Henry took a five-wicket haul against India but it has been their spinners that have provided control in the middle overs.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand won’t make too many changes for this semi-final, plausibly none.

Verdict

It’s hard to predict the winner without seeing how the teams stack up. However, we know for a fact that the ground in Lahore has a lightning outfield. Stake has an interesting handicap for total fours (over/under 52.5). Considering how fast the outfield is and the quality of these two batting teams, we would take the over.
