UP Warriorz are off the mark with a shellacking of the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, after two consecutive defeats to open the tournament. Meanwhile, Gujarat Giants, who released the most players after finishing last in WPL 2023, are searching for their first win.
Both teams haven’t entirely identified their best combination, so it’ll be a battle of two imperfect teams seeking a touch of perfection to get their campaign up and running.
Warriorz discovered a new star in Kiran Navgire, who smashed a 31-ball 57 as an opener after failing in the first two matches as a middle-order batter.
She only got that chance by accident, as Vrinda Dinesh, the designated opener, injured her shoulder while fielding.
It’ll be impossible to now slot Navgire back into the middle order. Grace Harris’ reputation as a six-hitter was further enhanced as she ended with a 17-ball 38 cameo to seal victory.
Giants have fielded two different opening combinations in the first two games. Beth Mooney has been a constant, but in the first game they tried out Veda Krishnamurthy, who is predominantly a finisher. In the second, they promoted Harleen Deol. Both these combinations failed to deliver results.
It underlines a sense of confusion within the group, despite boasting of some wonderfully talented players like Phoebe Litchfield and Ash Gardner. D Hemalatha’s form has injected some life into the middle order. Now for the rest to fire in unison.

UP Warriorz began the tournament poorly, but there was this sense that they’re way better than that. Alyssa Healy is due for a big score. Expect Healy to go out all guns blazing.
She hasn’t been batting badly, but hasn’t had the kind of luck she would like. Perhaps Friday will be her night. Tahlia McGrath is another player to look out for in the batting department.
With the pitches expected to take turn, Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma become key players. Warriorz are the firm favourites, and it would need a herculean effort from the Giants to prevent themselves from going down for a third game running.
