The Pakistan Super League, PCB’s franchise-based T20 competition, is currently in its ninth year. The tournament is being hosted in its entirety in Pakistan, having weathered a number of challenges such as the country’s elections, competition from the ILT20 from UAE, and availability of A-list international stars.
Teams and Formats
Lahore Qalandars are the defending champions and have won the last two seasons back-to-back. The possibility of a hat-trick has slipped by, with them having lost six in six. All that is left is for them to play for pride and possibly narrow down on a combination they can build on for next year.
The 2024 season began on February 17 and runs until March 18, the day of the grand finale. There are 30 round-robin matches [each side plays the other twice] followed by two Qualifiers, an Eliminator, and the final.
Venues
The six-team tournament is being staged across four venues – Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore, National Stadium in Karachi, Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan, and Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. Nine games have been allotted to Lahore and Rawalpindi, while Multan has already hosted five at the start of the season. Karachi hosts the most number of games, 11, this season.
Captains and Lineups
Five of the six teams are being captained by Pakistan internationals. Rilee Rossouw (Quetta Gladiators) is the only overseas captain this time around. Shaheen Afridi (Lahore Qalandars), Babar Azam (Peshawar Zalmi), Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans), Shan Masood (Karachi Kings) and Shadab Khan (Islamabad United) are the other captains.
Some of the well-known overseas stars include Kieron Pollard (Karachi Kings), Colin Munro (Islamabad United), Sikandar Raza (Lahore Qalandars), David Malam (Multan Sultans), Rovman Powell (Peshawar Zalmi) and Sherfane Rutherford (Quetta Gladiators).
Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Amir are among the retired Pakistani stars featuring in the competition. The big miss is Afghanistan T20 superstar Rashid Khan, who is recuperating from a back surgery.
Where To Watch
The PCB reported a 113% increase in value of their live-streaming rights and 45% increase in value of their broadcast rights while announcing their new broadcast deal for the next two seasons – 2024 and 2025.
ARY Digital won the broadcast rights of the PSL and will showcase the games on A Sports HD and Ten Sports HD. Sports are the digital broadcasters in Pakistan, while TV viewers can catch the action on ARY Digital. Those in India can stream the games on the FanCode app. Sky Sports have acquired the rights to broadcast the games in UK and New Zealand while those in Australia can watch it on Fox Sports.
