Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe ODI Preview & Tips
Afghanistan's last ODI outing ended in a comfortable six-wicket win over Ireland back in mid-August.
Zimbabwe hammered Bangladesh by 99 runs in their previous ODI as they surged to a statement win over their opponents.
- Afghanistan have won their last four ODI matches
Head To Head
Afghanistan have won eight of their last 10 against Zimbabwe, with the latter winning the other two ODI meetings.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan have built a good run across their last 10 ODI's after securing seven wins and losing three matches in this time.
Three wins overs Bangladesh have come alongside four consecutive wins over Ireland. In their series against Ireland, they secured wins by 92 runs, three wickets, 42 runs and six wickets. While Ireland are not in the top bracket of the men's game, Afghanistan still needed to be at their best to secure a series win of that magnitude.
However, they took a real hammering at the hands of India in their series as they were beaten by seven wickets, 170 runs and nine wickets. With India one of the best ODI teams in the game, this was another example of how far behind the very best they are.
Against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan will want to showcase their rapid improvements with bat and ball. They have a four-game winning run to protect, while they have also won their last five ODI's against Zimbabwe, and I back them to extend their impressive run.
Zimbabwe Form
Zimbabwe come into their clash with Afghanistan on the back of a stunning 99-run win over Bangladesh as they surged to the top of the ODI Tri-Series table after one game.
Batting first, Zimbabwe were able to put on 271/8 as Craig Ervine (93) and Brendan Taylor (81) starred with the bat. With the ball, Zimbabwe were even better. They bowled their opponents out for just 172 in 33.4 overs, with Brad Evans (4/45) particularly good.
Now, attention turns to beating a side for the first time since a two-run win in their ODI back in March of 2018. Since then, Zimbabwe have not been good enough to seriously challenge their opponents, and I predict that their five-game losing run to Afghanistan will only be extended.
Verdict
I am backing Afghanistan to open their account in this ODI Tri-Series with a win as they down a spirited Zimbabwe side.
