Australia vs New Zealand Women 1st T20 Preview & Tips

Australia Women return to the Twenty20 game for the first time since easily beating England by seven wickets in the T20 World Cup final back in July.

New Zealand Women also return to the T20 game for the first time since their World Cup campaign was brought to an end by England in a nine-wicket loss.

Across their last 10 T20 meetings, Australia have won nine times and New Zealand have secured a single win back in 2021.

Australia Women Form

Australia Women continue to prove they are by far and away the best side in the women's game and will target a clean sweep in their series against New Zealand as the only result positive result.

Across their last 12, they have surged to a series of impressive wins by dispatching top sides including India, the West Indies, England and South Africa. The quality in this Australian side is such that even England, who were hosting the 2026 World Cup and looked in great form, were swatted aside in a stunning seven-wicket loss in the grand final.

Their quality is not just confined to the shortest format either. 22 straight wins across formats has seen the Aussies underline that they are the best, and they will be keen to turn nine consecutive wins over New Zealand in the T20 game to 10 games.

Phoebe Litchfield continues to score runs for Australia and she was in fine form in their recent ODI series against Bangladesh, returning scores of 77 and 70. Her ability to carve boundaries and rotate the strike makes her a nightmare to bowl against, and I back her to start well in the first T20.

New Zealand Women Form

New Zealand Women have struggled with consistency in the shortest format over their last 10, losing five times and winning five times.

Their poor run came to a head at the 2026 World Cup as they were knocked out of the competition in the group-stage. Their opening match saw them comfortably beaten by the West Indies in a seven-wicket loss before they were beaten by Sri Lanka. Wins over Ireland and Scotland saw them bounce back, but they were then hammered by England in a nine-wicket loss.

As is the way for every side that travels to take on Australia, this series will more than likely be about trying to stay competitive in each game whilst trying to snatch a single win. A major worry for New Zealand will be that they have lost their last nine T20's against Australia, and their form alludes to this one seeing that run extended, not ended.
