Australia vs New Zealand Women 2nd T20 Preview & Tips
Australia Women had to really battle for victory in their opening match of their T20 series against New Zealand as they secured a two-wicket win over the plucky tourists.
New Zealand Women were on the cusp of a famous win over Australia in their first T20, but they could not take the final two wickets that would have seen them move into a 1-0 series lead.
- Ellyse Perry top scored for Australia with 52 from 30 in the first T20
- Australia have won their last 13 T20 matches
Head To Head
Australia have won their last 10 matches against New Zealand in the T20 format.
Australia Women Form
Despite only taking two wickets in the first T20, Australia would have been very confident against New Zealand after restricting the touring side to 162/2.
However, scores of 38 for Beth Mooney, 52 for Ellyse Perry and 23 for Ashleigh Gardner was as good as it got for Australia as they struggled to their target of 163. Having lost eight wickets and only having seven deliveries remaining, Australia were in a real fight and they will know that they need to build on this win if they are to triumph across the series.
Ellyse Perry was in brilliant touch with the bat in the opener as her score of 52 came with a strike rate of 173.33. While the rest of their batting unit struggled for consistent runs, Perry impressed, and I back her to continue to star with runs.
New Zealand will return boosted by how close the first T20 was, but I predict that this will only see the Aussies up their game as they surge to a 14th consecutive T20 win.
New Zealand Women Form
What could have been for New Zealand Women in the first T20 as they missed out on the chance to secure a first T20 win over Australia since March of 2021.
In their opener, New Zealand saw Georgia Plimmer (85 not out) and Maddy Green (56 not out) score the majority of their runs. However, their strike rates meant that they fell well short of 200 runs. While 180 may have proved a winning score, New Zealand were let down by their inability to turn keeping Australia's bowlers honest into quick runs.
Despite their defeat, New Zealand will be buoyed by their performance in the first T20. They were excellent with the ball and looked solid with the bat. The focus now has to be on building on their performance in the first T20, but I predict that they will suffer from a similar fate as they did in the first T20 as any hopes of notching a win are dashed.
Verdict
I am backing Ellyse Perry to back-up her half-century in the first T20 as she leads her side into a 2-0 series lead over New Zealand.
