Bangladesh vs West Indies 2nd Test Preview & Tips

Bangladesh crumbled in the first Test against the West Indies as their batting unit failed to make the most out of a 27-run lead heading into their second innings.

The West Indies were excellent across the second innings as they skittled their hosts for 142 before cruising to an eight-wicket win.

  • Bangladesh have avoided defeat in two of their last four Tests (W1, D1, L2)

Head To Head

Across their last 10 Tests, Bangladesh have won three meetings and the Windies have won seven times.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh were in the ascendancy after they managed to make the most out of their first innings score of 272 by bowling the Windies out for 245, thus seeing them take a 27-run lead into their second innings.

However, a top score of 52 from number eight Nayeem Hasan saw the home side limp to 142. With the ball holding the advantage over the ball across a Test that saw both sides fail to breach the 300-run mark, Bangladesh would have felt that an early wicket in the Windies' second innings would have them in the game.

Unfortunately for the home side, these early wickets were not forthcoming. By the time John Campbell (49) departed, the score stood at 112/1 with the touring side only needing 58 to win. Positive were the performances of Shadman Islam (102) and Nayeem Hasan (4/33), but they were outdone by a Windies side that played the conditions in the second innings better.

Now, attention turns to putting the lessons they have learnt into practice for the second Test. The West Indies are not a hugely consistent team, but if Bangladesh give them the room to set a score and then play loose shots or give their wickets away, the home side will struggle.

However, Bangladesh are the favourites to win the second test for a reason. When things come together, they are very tough to beat, and I am backing them to bounce back with a much-improved performance.

West Indies Form

The West Indies were able to build on taking fairly regular Bangladesh wickets in the first innings before rallying from 97/4 to only trail by 27 runs after their own first innings.

The best display in the match came from the West Indies' bowling unit in Bangladesh's second innings as they tore through the home team. Bangladesh went from 28/1 to 35/5 in a stunning collapse that saw the home side crumble alarmingly. Roston Chase (5/36) and Jomel Warrican (4/63) did most of the damage as the Windies were set 170 to win.

The major worry for the West Indies heading into the second Test is consistency. If Bangladesh had been able to set around 230 or more to win, would the openers of the touring team have scored as easily? While this was not the case, their batting unit is one that makes backing them a worry.

While they have been better across their last five after winning four times, they are yet to convince me fully following eight defeats in their last 15. I predict that the positives from their opening win will not lead into a series victory as they are pegged back by a team that were hugely disappointing in the first Test.

Verdict

I am backing Bangladesh to bounce back from their frustrating loss in the first Test as they ensure the series ends 1-1.
