England vs Australia Third ODI

A chance to close out the series presents itself as Australia looks to keep England on the mat in the ODI series. They take a 2-0 lead to the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Tuesday with the third match of the five ODI series to be played from 5 p.m. IST.

England looked out of sorts in the first two matches, while Australia managed to play around their problems and manage to post two comprehensive wins. I am putting my money on the visitors to come good with their openers once again in this match.

  • Australia posted the highest o/p in 6 of their last 7 matches against England (ODIs).
  • England conceded the highest o/p in 2 of their last 3 matches at home against Australia (ODIs)
  • Travis Head has been Australia’s best batsman in 3 of his last 5 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

England and Australia played each other in 158 ODIs so far, with England winning 88, losing 65, two matches tied, and three ending without any result.

Australia have now won seven consecutive ODIs against England going back to September 2020.

England Form

After the T20I series ended level at 1-1, England lost both their matches in the ODIs so far. They were beaten by seven wickets in the first match in Nottingham and then by 68 runs in Leeds.

They have now lost seven ODIs in a row against their old rivals Australia, which is not a record they will be proud of. Stopping that would necessitate swift adjustments to their strategy.

Ben Duckett (127 runs) has been the best batsman for England in this series with scores of 95 and 32. With the ball, Jacob Bethell has three wickets to his name, the same as Matty Potts and Brydon Carse.

England Team News

Jofra Archer was rested for the second ODI, and Ollie Stone replaced him. Will England go back to their prime pacer? A shuffle in the batting order could be on the cards.

Australia Form

World Champions Australia continued their dominance over England, winning the first two ODIs comprehensively. Achieving those wins despite the injuries across their squad makes them the tough side that they are.

The visitors are enjoying a great phase, and stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh is even ready to test his fitness by bowling a few overs to go with his batting.

Travis Head is Australia’s best batter in the series with 183 runs (SR 117.30), coming from scores of 154* and 29. Among the bowlers, Adam Zampa has four wickets, while Mitchell Starc has three wickets from the only ODI he played.

Australia Team News

The second match saw Australia bring the likes of Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, and Josh Hazlewood back into the playing XI. Unless they want to rest any player, the Aussies could continue with the same side.

Verdict

Do England have it in them to bounce back? The hosts need big change in their performance to arrest the losing slide against Australia. It is anybody’s guess if they can do that here, but the chances look slim. As for Australia, they look very settled and could once again bank on their openers to lead the charge. I am backing Australia to post the highest opening partnership.
