England vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview & Tips

England cruised to victory over Pakistan in the first Test as Joe Root began his second stint as England captain with a big win.

Pakistan have a lot of thinking to do ahead of the second Test after they were completely outdone with bat and ball.

  • Ollie Robinson averages 19.30 at Lord’s with the ball
  • England have won five of their last seven Tests against Pakistan (L2)

Head To Head

England have secured six wins in their last 10 Tests against Pakistan, with the latter winning twice and two games ending as draws.

England Form

England’s batters were only required once in the first Test against Pakistan as they utilised the conditions perfectly to ensure their score of 409 was a winning one.

Ollie Robinson set the tone with the wicket of Azan Awais for a golden duck, with Pakistan then going from 97/2 to 171 all out. A lack of any kind of sticking power in the middle-order coupled with England’s bowlers storming in with pace and power saw Pakistan crumble.

Against a better bowling attack, England might have struggled, but they made the most out of a severe lack of pace and control in the Pakistan bowling unit. With the ball in the second innings, England were excellent, using the conditions and the new ball to knock the touring side over cheaply once again.

While Pakistan are hardly a top-tier Test side, this was a welcome return to winning ways for England. Ollie Robinson continues to showcase his quality with the ball as his control continually troubled the bat and found the edge or swung late back into the pads.

With eight wickets in the match, Robinson will once again be the main man with the ball for England. Robinson averages 19.30 with the ball at Lord’s with 23 wickets coming in eight innings. I back Robinson to star again as England storm into an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan will need to do some serious soul-searching heading into the second Test after they were blown away by England’s far superior bowling attack.

While batting first was always going to prove tricky, Pakistan were guilty of allowing one wicket to bring another, while they were really poor with the ball on day two as they failed to use bowler friendly conditions to their advantage.

A real lack of pace in Pakistan’s seam attack hurt them, while their top three combining for 85 runs across the two innings is a problem. Babar Azam will likely return for the second Test, but he will not be able to stem the flow of wickets alone.

Issues with bat, ball and in the field saw Pakistan barely throw a punch in the opening Test. To alleviate their issues of underachieving will take a lot more time than they have between Tests, meaning I back nothing more than a defeat for the touring side in the second Test.

Verdict

I am backing Robinson to continue to torment Pakistan with the ball as England secure another win over their opponents.
