India vs West Indies 1st Test Preview & Tips
India switch back into Test cricket mode this week as they look to begin their two-game series against the West Indies with a win.
The West Indies were humiliated by Nepal across their recent T20 series, with the Test team in need of a win to take away from the woes of their T20 side.
- India have won their last six against the Windies
- The West Indies have lost five of their last six Tests
- Shubman Gill is averaging 65.58 in Tests in 2025
Head To Head
In their last 10 Test match meetings, India have secured seven wins with the other three games ending as draws.
India Form
India were not quite at their best against England across their five-match Test series, with the clash ending in a 2-2 draw. In a contest that swung one way and then the other, the tourists were not quite able to take advantage of squaring the series up at 1-1 with all of their momentum with them.
They now turn their attention to an opponent that has struggled in the Test arena of late. The Windies have lost their last three in the longest format by triple-figure margins each time. Meanwhile, India arrive as the fourth best Test side in the men's game, and they will fancy their chances of moving up the rankings.
While Shubman Gill currently sits in 13th in the men's Test batting rankings, he is enjoying a stellar year. Gill has notched 787 runs at 65.58, with this including four centuries and no fifties. This simply means that if Gill goes past the 50 run mark, he has made it to triple figures each time.
I back Gill to star in India's opening match against the Windies as the home team easily beat the touring side.
West Indies Form
The West Indies have been enduring a torrid time across formats, with the side arriving for their Test series with India on the back of a humiliating 2-1 series loss to Nepal. While the Windies were beaten in the T20 format, worrying defeats can bleed into other formats of the game.
In the Test arena, the Windies were beaten 3-0 by Australia in their Test series. This saw the Aussies win by 159 runs, 133 runs and 176 runs. At no point did the West Indies look like they would truly challenge the Aussies in a very one-sided series.
A side in fantastic form would still likely arrive for a tour of India as the underdog, meaning the West Indies appearing in woeful form means it would take an incredibly brave bettor to back them to win their first Test since January.
Verdict
I am backing Shubman Gill to score over 86.5 runs as India ease into a 1-0 series lead.
