Namibia vs South Africa 1st T20 Preview & Tips

Namibia will arrive for the opening match of their Twenty20 tri-series looking to extend a very impressive five-game winning run in the shortest format.

South Africa beat New Zealand by 33 runs in their last T20 all the way back in March.

South Africa have won their last two in the T20 game

Head To Head

The pair have met twice before in the T20 game, with South Africa winning once and Namibia winning once.

Namibia Form

Namibia may be the minnows in their own T20 tri-series, but they arrive on the back of a good run of form that has seen them secure five successive wins.

It is worth bearing in mind that these victories have come against Scotland, Hong Kong twice and Nigeria twice. While a team has to focus on beating the opponent in front of them, Namibia have hardly taken on a side in the same bracket as South Africa.

Perhaps more telling for Namibia is their run of six consecutive defeats prior to their winning run. This streak included World Cup defeats to the Netherlands, India, the USA and Pakistan before a pair of defeats to Scotland.

While South Africa arrive with a number of big names missing, they will still be in a different bracket to Namibia. While anything can happen in the T20 game, Namibia will have to be perfect to win this one, and I do not predict that this will happen.

South Africa have been good across their last 10 in the T20 game, although they have played no cricket in the shortest format since March.

In their last 10, South Africa have won seven times, with this run including wins over the UAE, India, the West Indies and New Zealand three times. They have also lost to the Black Caps three times in this run.

The quality of opponent they have played has been high, while they also impressed in their 3-2 T20 series win over New Zealand. In that series, South Africa took the chance to rotate their squad and looked good in the immediate period following the World Cup.

While South Africa are weaker than they would like to be, I back them to ease past Namibia in their opening T20 encounter.
