New Zealand vs India 1st T20 Preview & Tips

New Zealand are looking to bounce back from a frustrating 1-1 series draw with Bangladesh in their last T20 series as they were forced to come from 1-0 down to tie the contest.

India were denied the chance to secure a series win over the West Indies as the fifth and final T20 was rained off, seeing the series end 2-2.

  • Ishan Kishan is averaging 37.25 in the T20 game in 2026
  • India have won their last two T20’s against the Black Caps

Head To Head

Across their last 10 T20 meetings, India have won seven matches, New Zealand have won twice and one game has ended as a tie.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand return to the Twenty20 game for the first time since their 1-1 series draw with Bangladesh back in April and May.

Their draw with Bangladesh came off the back of a 3-2 series loss to South Africa in which the Black Caps were on top after three T20’s. Despite going 2-1 up, New Zealand contrived to lose the series 3-2 on the back of defeats by 19 runs and 33 runs. Both sides fielded a range of up-and-coming talent which should be taken into account. Despite this, six defeats across their last 10 T20’s shows they hardly arrive for this series in great form.

Against India, New Zealand have generally struggled. A 96-run defeat in their last T20 meeting came in the T20 World Cup final back in March, with this making it seven defeats in their last eight meetings in the shortest format.

While the Black Caps have home advantage and a range of talent at their disposal, they have not generally been good enough to consistently beat India, and I predict their poor run against their opponents will continue in their opening T20.

India Form

India needed to be at their best against the West Indies across their Twenty20 series as the pair traded blows in a thrilling contest.

Denied a real conclusion to the contest by the weather, their 2-2 draw felt fair in a clash in which the bat was well on top against the ball. Wins by eight wickets and 14 runs for India  came alongside defeats by six wickets and 24 runs. The performance of India’s bowling unit will be a concern heading into the series, but if their batters can fire on all cylinders, then they will be very confident.

Ishan Kishan was in good form across the series as he returned scores of 37 not out, 43, 37, six and 30. His ability to score runs quickly and rotate the strike makes him a nightmare to bowl against, and he will be confident that he can improve on his average of 37.35 in the T20 game in 2026.

For India, this series constitutes a chance to get back to winning ways and add to a run of 11 wins in their last 14 T20 matches. After winning seven of their last eight T20’s against New Zealand, I am backing them to secure another triumph.

Verdict

I am backing Ishan Kishan to impress with the bat as he continues his excellent form with more runs.
