New Zealand vs India 2nd T20 Preview & Tips
New Zealand fell to a stunning four-wicket loss at the hands India in the first T20 as they saw their score of 225/4 chased down in a thrilling clash.
India were superb with the bat in the first T20 as they found a way to smash 230 runs in 19.4 overs in a serious show of batting power.
- Sanju Samson scored 67 from 33 in the first T20
- New Zealand have won three of their last five matches (L2)
Head To Head
Across their last 10 T20 meetings, India have won eight times while New Zealand have won twice.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand will have felt that they had done enough to seriously test India in the first T20 as they smashed their way to an imposing 225/4 in their 20 overs.
Glenn Phillips starred with a brilliant 82 from 40 as he hammered eight boundaries and three maximums. Every single India bowler came in for some serious punishment with each of the five going for 10.00 runs per over or more. However, the Black Caps were also pummelled in the field as they saw the touring sides roar to a four-wicket win. Naman Dhir did the damage late on as his score of 42 from 15 got India across the line in a thrilling run-chase.
Despite defeat in the opener, New Zealand will feel that on another day, they would have done enough to win that match. Some of the hitting from Phillips was outrageous, and with the second T20 set to be played at the Hagley Oval again, I am backing the Black Caps to showcase their ability to bounce back by winning the second T20.
India Form
As was the case in their recent T20 series against the West Indies, India needed their batting unit to provide some serious firepower after their bowlers struggled to take wickets and contain the opposition.
New Zealand's excellence with the bat saw them post a very impressive score of 225/4. While batting was clearly the stronger suit on the day, India could only take four wickets while New Zealand took six. In the end, India won despite losing more wickets, but the pressure that being further down the batting order applies meant that one miscued shot from Naman Dhir would have exposed India's tail.
India's run in the T20 game has seen the tourists win eight of their last 10. However, two of their last four have ended in defeat. I predict that this series has every chance of ending in a similar way to their clash with the Windies, as the pair traded wins in a series that ended 2-2.
Sanju Samson looked very good for his 67 in the first T20, and while I back him to impress in the second meeting, I do not predict that he will end on the winning team.
Verdict
I am backing Samson to go beyond the 30-run mark again, but I predict that he will end on the losing side as New Zealand bounce back.
