Pakistan vs England ODI Preview & Tips
Pakistan roared to an important win over Sri Lanka in their opening match of their tri-series as they handed their opponents a 37-run loss.
England return to ODI duty for the first time since their comfortable 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka back in September.
- Harry Brook scored 67, 1 and 77 against Sri Lanka in their recent series
- England have won four of their last five ODI's (L1)
Head To Head
England have won eight of their last 10 ODI's against Pakistan, with the latter winning the other two.
Pakistan Form
Pakistan were excellent in their opening match of their ODI tri-series as they battled their way to an imposing score of 305 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 268.
With the bat, Salman Ali Agha scored a defiant 107 as he laid the foundation for Pakistan's good score as Babar Azam also chipped in with 45. With the ball, Shaheen Shah Afridi impressed with a score of 3/55 as Pakistan kept Sri Lanka well short of their target. With England to come, Pakistan knew they needed to beat Sri Lanka, and that is exactly what they did.
Now, attention switches to their clash with the best side in the tri-series. England have looked better of late in the 50 over game, while they have won their last four ODI's against Pakistan. Pakistan will hope to ruffle England's feathers in their first ODI since late-September, but I predict that they will have to try to regroup after a frustrating loss.
England Form
Whether England have returned to some semblance of the world beating ODI side they once had remains to be seen, but they have looked much better of late, with their last eight 50 over matches resulting in six wins.
A pair of 2-1 series wins over Sri Lanka in January and September sandwiched a 2-1 win over India in July. When England are in the mood, they are more than a match for anyone. However, a lack of batters that are happy to dig in and soak up pressure has often cost them, especially if the conditions are bowler friendly.
Despite sometimes being guilty of playing one too many shots, Harry Brook continues to be England's go-to player in the shorter formats. His consistent scores against Sri Lanka saw England's captain impress, and if he can hit the ground running then England will win this game.
Verdict
I am backing England to get their tri-series off to a winning start as Brook impresses with the bat.
