Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Gujarat Titans Preview & Tips
Royal Challengers Bangalore just about sealed their place at the top of the IPL standings via net run rate following a disappointing 55-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final match.
Gujarat Titans hammered Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs in their final IPL group game as they bounced back from a 29-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders.
- RCB have lost three of their last six in the IPL (W3)
- GT beat RCB by four wickets when the side last met on April 30
Head To Head
GT have won four of their previous eight against RCB, with the latter winning the other four meetings.
Royal Challengers Bangalore Form
Royal Challengers Bangalore may have ended the season at the top of the IPL standings, but they were given an almighty scare as they were easily beaten by Sunrisers Hyderabad in a 55-run loss in their final group game.
After seeing SRH hammer their way to 255/4, RCB laboured to 200/4 as any hopes of finishing the season with a win were dashed. This loss saw each of RCB's six bowlers go for 12.00 or more, with Josh Hazlewood (0-55) given particularly harsh treatment. With only four SRH wickets falling on a batter-friendly pitch, RCB's bowlers were put to the sword.
Against GT, they will feel they are the favourites, but their run of two defeats in three against their opponents is a disappointing tally. The main worry is that GT are the form team in the competition right now, and I predict the league leaders will struggle, especially if Virat Kohli is to find runs tough to come by.
Gujarat Titans Form
Gujarat Titans would have been watching on with real interest as RCB took on SRH in their final group game. While RCB notched enough runs to keep their net run rate ahead of GT, the league's second placed side would have watched that bowling performance and taken a lot of confidence from it.
Their top three in Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler is arguably the best in the competition. If they fire, few teams can handle them. If the openers can get at RCB's bowlers then the home side will fear more punishment is at hand. Of course, if RCB can get at GT's top order then this will completely flip the script, with the middle-order of the latter not as dependable as their top three.
Despite this, I predict that GT's top order will win their battle with RCB's bowlers. GT are the form side in the competition and will benefit from an extra day without cricket.
Verdict
I am backing GT to secure their place in the IPL grand final as they consign RCB to the second Eliminator.
