The Women’s Twenty20 World Cup will see New Zealand looking to defend a crown they won in the UAE in 2024 as they beat South Africa in a dominant 32-run win in the grand final.

Across the tournament, favourites including Australia, India and England all underperformed as none were able to take one of the two places in the showpiece final. This year, a big target will be placed on the backs of New Zealand as they look to make it consecutive T20 World Cup crowns.

In 2024, it was the White Ferns that found a way to triumph in a tournament that did not go as most had predicted.

In the group stage, India were eliminated behind Australia and New Zealand, while England were knocked out with the West Indies and South Africa advancing from Group B via their superior run rates.

In the semi-finals, favourites Australia then fell in a stunning loss to South Africa. This had South Africa confident heading into their clash with New Zealand, but they were left stunned by a superb all-round performance from the White Ferns in the final.

Despite lifting the trophy in 2024, New Zealand do not arrive as the favourites. In fact, each of Australia, India, England and South Africa are seen as far more viable options, with the White Ferns languishing behind.

Australia are massive favourites ahead of the tournament. The reason for this will be their continued dominance of women’s cricket along with the six titles they have won in nine World Cups. England, New Zealand and the West Indies have won one apiece, with the Aussies outperforming every other side at the tournament time and time again.

England will be confident they can better their dismal group stage exit in 2024 as they host the tournament. Playing in home conditions will see the English given a real advantage, but hosting a World Cup and performing well at the competition often prove to be two very different things.

Meanwhile, India and South Africa will also hope to perform, with runners-up medals the best either side has been able to do at the T20 World Cup.

With the tournament edging ever closer, which side will triumph and take the trophy? Can New Zealand defend their crown or will the Aussies get back to dominating the tournament?
