Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Karen Khachanov Preview

Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after a victory over Lorenzo Sonego. The Greek was close to losing the tiebreak of the first set and was three points down before he bounced back.

The second set was also headed to a tiebreak before Tsitsipas broke Sonego’s serve in the eighth game and successfully defended his serve to take the match 7(7)-6(4), 6-3.

Meanwhile, Karen Khachanov was up against wildcard Daniel Evans in the first round. It was a one-sided affair since the start as Khachanov racked up two break points in the first three games. He added another one to his tally when he took the first set 6-1.

Evans tried to recover in the second set by securing a breakpoint in the third game. However, that came after he conceded a break point to Khachanov, who eventually went on to win the match 6-1, 6-3.

Khachanov will now be up against Tsitsipas in the second round—an opponent that he has not enjoyed playing against in the past.

Stefanos Tsitsipas: Season So Far

Tsitsipas was the 11th seed at the Australian Open at the start of this year. The expectations were high, but the 26-year-old failed to deliver and bowed out of the tournament after a first-round loss to world number 34 Alex Michelsen.

Less than a month after the Grand Slam exit, Tsitsipas reached the quarterfinals of the Rotterdam Open. In the first round of that tournament, the Greek registered a 6-1, 7-5 win over Harold Mayot before beating scraping past home favourite Tallon Griekspoor 6(5)-7(7), 7(8)-6(6), 7-5. The short winning stint ended after Tsitsipas fell to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat against Mattia Bellucci in the quarterfinals.

Struggles on the hard surface continued in the Gulf for the world number 11 as he faced a first-round defeat at the Qatar Open. Tsitsipas lost to special-exempt Hamad Medjedovic in a closely-contested three-setter that ended 7(8)-6(6), 5-7, 7(7)-6(5).

Karen Khachanov: Season So Far

Khachanov started the new calendar year with a stellar straight-sets victory over Adrian Mannarino in the first round of the Australian Open. In the second round, he dropped a set but bounced back perfectly to beat Gabriel Diallo 7(7)-6(4), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the third round, Khachanov faced the man who eliminated Tsitsipas – Alex Michelsen. Michelsen brought his A-game to the court and registered a 6-3, 7(7)-6(5), 6-2 victory over Kachanov.

Earlier this month, Khachanov played in two ATP tournaments – The Open 13 in Marseille and the Qatar Open. He suffered first-round losses in both competitions.

In France, he lost in straight sets against another opponent that beat Tsitsipas – Hamad Medjedovic. In Qatar, Khachanov made compatriot Daniil Medvedev sweat before eventually losing 6-4, 5-7, 3-6.

Head To Head

In the last ten matches between Tsitsipas and Khachanov, eight have gone in favour of the Greek, leaving Khachanov with just two wins, one of which was an exhibition match. When these two met in the 2023 Miami Open, Khachanov beat Tsitsipas 7(7)-6(4), 6-4 in the fourth round.

After that, these two athletes met twice and on both occasions, Tsitsipas secured victories in straight sets. The first came in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Paris Masters and the second was in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, where Tsitsipas went all the way to win his third Masters title.

Verdict

Tsitsipas finds comfort on clay and has struggled on hard surfaces very often. However, the odds will still be in his favour when he locks horns with Khachanov in the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. We’re backing the talent of Tsitsipas to come away with the tough points and the win.
