Pakistan vs Australia 1st ODI Preview & Tips
Pakistan are looking to bounce back from a frustrating 2-1 ODI series loss to Bangladesh in their last 50 over outing back in March.
Australia crumbled to a nine-wicket loss at the hands of India in their last ODI, although this did come back in October 2025.
- Australia have lost four of their last seven in the ODI game (W3)
- Babar Azam averages 53.73 in ODI’s for Pakistan
Head To Head
Pakistan have won four of their last 10 ODI’s against Australia with the latter winning the other six.
Pakistan Form
Pakistan have been looking for consistency across formats, with the nation losing six of their last 10 matches.
An inability to consistently test and beat teams means they are still someway short of the very best in the world, but they will fancy themselves against an Aussie side that boasts a very fresh look.
For Pakistan, the rejuvenation of Babar Azam throughout the Pakistan Super League saw their talisman smashing runs regularly. He will be the prize wicket for Australia in this match, with a good start vital to his confidence across the series.
Shaheen Afridi will also be key, with the captain and premier fast bowler likely to take the new ball when the match begins. Both Afridi and Azam will be crucial across the series, especially as they look to secure their sixth win in eight ODI’s.
Australia Form
With a very inexperienced squad travelling to take on Pakistan, this series feels like it will be one that is more of a learning experience for a side looking to build experience.
Adam Zampa, Alex Carey, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green will provide the experience and quality, but can they provide that winning touch to the side? The squad feels like it is missing a true match-winning hitter with Glenn Maxwell not with the touring party.
Across their last 10, the Aussies have lost six times, beating England once, South Africa once and India twice. While those wins have generally been solid, their defeats have been very disappointing, with their nine-wicket loss to India in their last game particularly poor.
While the Aussies will likely grow into this series, I am backing them to have to do things the hard way if they are to triumph across the tour after losing their opener.
Verdict
I am backing Babar Azam to lead from the front with the bat as he guides the home side to victory in the first ODI.
