West Indies vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI Preview & Tips
The West Indies struggled to get close to Sri Lanka in the opening ODI as they limped to a 41-run loss at the hands of the tourists.
Sri Lanka were outstanding with the bat in the opening ODI as they stormed to what proved an unassailable 303/7.
- The Windies have lost their last five in the 50 over format
- Sri Lanka have won four of their last five against the Windies in the ODI game (L1)
Head To Head
Sri Lanka have secured wins in six of their last 10 against the Windies in the ODI format with the latter winning the other four.
West Indies Form
The West Indies would have been worrying about the size of the target they may have been chasing in the first ODI as the touring side cruised to 158/1 after 27.5 overs. While they did restrict their opponents to 303/7, which was something of a win considering Sri Lanka's position halfway through the innings, notching 304 runs to win always looked like a tall order.
When chasing, the Windies struggled to halt the fall of wickets. While they did not come in clusters, Sri Lanka sent batters back to the pavilion regularly enough to curtail any real momentum, with this forcing the Windies into resetting, and this ultimately cost them.
Shai Hope's 56 was their top score on the day with the home side unable to really press on and score big runs. While Sri Lanka also failed to post an individual century, they did see two batters pass the 70-run mark, with this ultimately proving the difference.
At home, the Windies will be confident that they can bounce back, but they have looked like they are missing a player that will help them to really motor in the latter-stages of the innings. If they are unable to find a batter to go big then I predict another frustrating loss for the Windies as their poor ODI form continues.
Sri Lanka Form
It was a nearly perfect return to ODI cricket for Sri Lanka as most facets of their game fired in a 41-run win.
With the bat, Pathum Nissanka (79) and Kusal Mendis (72) went well, while there were solid scores across the middle order. The one worry will be Kamindu Mendis' 12 from 21, although they will hope this is more of a blip in form. With the ball, bowlers kept to tight lines as they kept the Windies honest. Dushmantha Chameera's 4/67 saw the quick impress as the Windies were bowled out for 262.
In the ODI game, Sri Lanka have won two of their last four, losing two matches to England. Positively, their 19-run win over the English in the first ODI back in January saw Sri Lanka impress as they once again showcased their ability to challenge with bat and ball.
The Windies have been in awful form of late and while the touring side have a wobble in them, I predict they will take advantage of the woes of their hosts as they make it five wins in their last six ODI's against the Windies.
Verdict
I am backing Sri Lanka to secure a series win over the West Indies as they battle to a victory in the second ODI.
