Zimbabwe vs Australia 2nd ODI Preview & Tips

Zimbabwe could not make the most out of restricting Australia to less than a run-per-ball as they slumped to a 59-run loss at the hands of their opponents.

Australia were indebted to a superb 109 from 94 from Matt Renshaw as he led his side to a commanding 59-run win over the home side.

  • Zimbabwe have lost their last two ODI's
  • Mitchell Marsh averages 37.33 for Australia in ODI's

Head To Head

Australia have won five of the previous seven ODI's between the sides with Zimbabwe winning the other two meetings.

Zimbabwe Form

Zimbabwe would have felt they were right in the game as they saw the back of Travis Head for four with the score at 10/1. However, Mitchell Marsh (36) and Cooper Connolly (51) helped to steady the ship before Matt Renshaw ultimately took the game away from Zimbabwe.

Renshaw's 109 from 94 featured seven boundaries and three maximums as he took the momentum from Zimbabwe. Newman Nyamhuri returned figures of 5/62 in the match as he showcased both his wicket-taking ability and the fact he will go for some runs.

With the bat, Ben Curran's duck was not an ideal start and while Craig Ervine (59) and Sikandar Raza (57) posted half-centuries, a lack of a triple-figure score ultimately cost the home side.

Now, the focus is on trying to build on the positives of Nyamhuri's wicket-taking and solid starts for a handful of batters. While Zimbabwe have things to build on, I do not back them to get anything from this one as they see any chance of winning the series pass them by.

Australia Form

Australia will have been pleased with their exploits in their opening clash against Zimbabwe as they battled to 294/8 before skittling Zimbabwe for 235.

Three defeats in their previous four ODI's alluded to the Aussies having some difficulties in the 50-over game. Troubles when it comes to pacing an innings with the bat had been hurting Australia, while they had seen a number of big names struggle for runs. While Marsh and Alex Carey were not perfect, their scores of 36 and 27 respectively helped to halt Zimbabwe's momentum. They also saw Renshaw impress with the bat as he plundered 109 runs in the opener.

Nathan Ellis shone with the ball as he returned figures of 5/31, with their victory coming as much from his wicket-taking as it did their entire bowling unit keeping their economy rates low, seeing the pressure pile on the batters of the home team.

While it was not a perfect performance, the Aussies can be very pleased with their work in the first ODI. Another performance like that will see them surge to a series win, and I back them do just that as they beat Zimbabwe again. Marsh looked in decent touch for his 36, and I back him to help set-up a good score in the second ODI

Verdict

I am backing Marsh to add to his score of 36 in the first ODI as the captain leads from the front in another win.
