New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Women T20 World Cup Preview & Tips

New Zealand Women began the defence of their T20 World Cup title with a stunning seven-wicket loss to the West Indies as their hopes of making it out of the group took a major blow.

Sri Lanka Women were hammered by England in the opening match of the tournament as they slumped to an 87-run loss.

  • Sri Lanka have lost two of their last three T20's against New Zealand (W1)

Head To Head

New Zealand have won eight of their last 10 against Sri Lanka in the T20 format, with the latter winning the other two meetings.

New Zealand Women Form

New Zealand Women went into their clash with the West Indies knowing that a win would seriously ease any fears of missing out on a top two spot in the group with England to come.

However, the reigning champions were beaten by the Windies in a seven-wicket loss that means they will now likely have to win all of their remaining games, including their clash with England to progress. Their game against the West Indies saw their batters labour to 162/6, with their bowlers then only taking three wickets in an average display from the world champions.

Their second match will be one they simply have to use as a chance to kickstart their campaign. New Zealand have dominated Sri Lanka across their last 10, winning eight times. Defeat here is simply not an option, and I predict New Zealand will secure the points.

Sri Lanka Women Form

Sri Lanka Women knew they were right up against it in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup as they took on hosts England.

Despite the disparity in quality between the pair, Sri Lanka would have hoped for a close match as they tried to put pressure on the home side. However, they were played off the park with bat and ball, with England plundering 219/1 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 132.

While the gap between Sri Lanka and New Zealand is smaller than the gap between Sri Lanka and England, the difference in class is still vast. Sri Lanka will want to be better across the board in their second match, but I do not see them seriously troubling the world champions.

Verdict

I am backing New Zealand to beat Sri Lanka as they get their World Cup campaign up and running.
