Lahore Qalandars won't make the playoffs this time. Six losses in six games means they’re already staring at an early exit, perhaps drawing comfort from a few positives then can potentially build on next season.

It's been anything but a smooth initiation into PSL captaincy for Pakistan's poster boy Shaheen Afridi.

At Zalmi, the other poster boy, Babar Azam, has revelled in the freedom, helping him bring out an unshackled approach to batting, something he couldn’t do at Karachi Kings as captain.

This unburdening has helped bring out a domination like no other. His chart-topping 330 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 151.37 is ample proof.

Qalandar’s rut can’t be easily explained. It's not as if they've had zero performances of note. Rassie van der Dussen’s century - the first of PSL 2024 - two nights ago nearly helped pull off a sensational chase of 212, but a collapse around him hardly helped.

They’ve also felt the pinch of Haris Rauf’s absence due to injury which seems to have put all the more pressure on Zaman Khan to partner Shaheen, a responsibility that has seemed a tad too steep.

Where Qalandars have failed to match up is in the performances of their local Pakistani batters from whom much more ought to be expected. The key to the remainder of the season will be in how they respond from this position.
