Sri Lanka vs Ireland Women T20 World Cup Preview & Tips

Sri Lanka Women were left crushed by a five-wicket defeat at the hands of the West Indies as their World Cup knockout hopes took a major blow.

Ireland Women could not find a way past New Zealand in their last match as they were beaten by four runs.

Sri Lanka have won three of their previous five T20's against Ireland with the latter winning the other two.

Sri Lanka Women are still in with a chance of making it to the knockout stages of the World Cup after winning one of their opening three matches. Their recent loss to the West Indies put a major dent in their chances, with Sri Lanka needing to win their last two and for results to go their way.

A five-wicket win over a misfiring New Zealand saw them bounce back from a heavy 87-run loss to England in their opener, with Sri Lanka building towards a must-win clash with the Windies. However, they were skittled for 98 before seeing their opponents cruise to a five-wicket win as Sri Lanka slumped to a second loss in three World Cup games.

Victory over Ireland would move them onto four points with one game to play. With a maximum of six points on offer, Sri Lanka need to hope that they can win their final two and either England or the Windies lose their final two heavily.

Their hopes of making it into the knockout stages are hanging by a thread. Sri Lanka have not been good enough to seriously challenge the best, but I predict they will keep themselves alive in the hunt for a semi-final spot with a third T20 win over their opponents in their last four.

Ireland Women Form

Ireland Women have really struggled at the T20 World Cup, with the side out of contention for a top two finish with two games to play.

A 40-run loss to Scotland in their opener was quickly followed by a four-wicket loss to England and a tight four-run defeat to New Zealand. Their loss to New Zealand was one that saw their semi-final hopes extinguished, with the Irish stuttering as the innings came to an end.

An inability to make the most out of a bowling attack that has impressed at the tournament has really hurt Ireland, and I predict they will slump to another defeat as their winless World Cup goes on.
