Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia
Cape Verde have been one of the standout stories at the 2026 World Cup after avoiding defeat against both Spain and Uruguay. While they rode their luck against Spain in a 0-0 draw, they gave as good as they got against Uruguay, actually registering more shots on target (four) than their opponents (two) in a 2-2 draw. With the two sides well matched according to the odds, I am backing this one to end in a draw, with Cape Verde ending the group stage without tasting defeat.
Saudi Arabia would have been hoping to really frustrate Spain in their last outing after they held Uruguay in a battling 1-1 draw. However, they could not keep the Spanish out, with the European side cruising to a 4-0 win. While still in the hunt for a best third-placed spot, Saudi Arabia will likely miss out on the knockout stages as they finish their campaign with a draw.
Uruguay vs Spain
Uruguay may be on the cusp of a stunning World Cup group stage exit after an incredibly disappointing campaign. Their 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia was very disappointing, but their 2-2 draw with Cape Verde displayed a lack of defensive solidity in the side, with their attack also disappointing. If Uruguay are to lose to Spain and Cape Verde take anything from their game against Saudi Arabia, then Uruguay will be out at the group stage. Similarly, if Uruguay draw with Spain and either Cape Verde or Saudi Arabia win in their clash, Uruguay will go into the lottery of the third-placed spots. Uruguay really need a win in this one, but I do not see them getting anything from an opponent that has a point to prove.
Spain were incredibly poor in their opening match against Cape Verde as they became part of the biggest story of the opening round as they shared the points with their opponents. Despite taking 23 total shots, Spain failed to score. In truth, most of their efforts were speculative, with the Spanish really struggling to break their opponents down. They bounced back against Saudi Arabia in a 4-0 win, but this was a victory that was expected and will do little to ensure they can forget about their poor opening result. This simply means that Spain have to beat Uruguay to head into the knockouts with momentum behind them. Two of the last three meetings between the pair have seen Spain win with less than 3.5 goals scored, and I expect more of the same in this one.
Verdict
I am backing Spain to beat Uruguay with under 3.5 goals scored which allows Cape Verde to somehow take their place in the playoffs following a draw with Saudi Arabia.
