India vs Afghanistan 3rd ODI Preview & Tips

India have been far too good for Afghanistan across their One Day International series, with the home side storming into an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Afghanistan have one last chance to land some form of blow on this Indian team after losing their one-off Test before going 2-0 down in their ODI series.

  • India have won their last two in the ODI game
  • Shubman Gill has scored 238 runs across the opening two ODI's

Head To Head

India have won five of their previous six ODI's against Afghanistan, with the other game ending as a tie back in 2018.

India Form

India knew they were some way clear of Afghanistan in terms of skill across formats, and they have showcased this disparity between the pair in a one-off Test they won by an innings and 300 runs before storming into a 2-0 series lead over their opponents in the ODI game.

While they looked solid in the first ODI, they were curtailed in their batting as they only needed to chase down 195 to win in 25 overs as Afghanistan went in to bat first. However, setting the score in the second ODI, India hammered Afghanistan's bowlers for 402 runs. Shubman Gill (154 from 110) and Ishan Kishan (125 from 79) turned on the style for India, with the pair combining for 36 boundaries and nine maximums.

With the ball, India looked good as they bowled the touring side out for 232 in 44.3 overs. Ultimately their 170-run win put into perspective how much better India after than Afghanistan across formats.

While the touring party will hope to find a way to pick up a win in the third and final ODI, I do not see them getting close to their opponents. India, led by Gill, will likely secure another win as they claim a 3-0 ODI series triumph.

Afghanistan Form

Afghanistan have struggled for any kind of momentum across their ODI series against India, with the touring side bettered with bat and ball.

While scoring 194 in 24.5 overs in a shortened first ODI and 232 in the second ODI would have put some other opponents under pressure, the quality this Indian team possesses simply means that this is rarely enough to truly challenge arguably the best side in the game.

Rashid Khan looked good with the ball in the second ODI as he took 3/48 in a match that saw six bowlers hit for 402 runs. While their chief weapon with the ball looks potent, I do not see him doing enough to turn the tide in this series as the touring side lose 3-0.

Verdict

I am backing Gill to go beyond the 50-run mark once again as India defeat Afghanistan for a third successive time in the ODI game.
