India vs England Third ODI Preview
India completed another series win as they beat England comfortably in the second ODI to win by four wickets in Cuttack. Chasing 305 for victory, India romped home with 33 balls left led by Rohit Sharma’s 119 off 90 balls, with 12 fours and seven sixes.
England made another sprightly start with a 81-run stand in the first 11 overs. Ben Duckett and Joe Root went on to score brisk fifties but that wasn’t enough as none of England’s batters were able to muster much in terms of momentum. Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone all made 30-plus scores but weren’t able to generate much more.
Eventually, England were bowled out for 304. Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets each while four other India bowlers claimed one wicket each.
In response, India made a rapid start with a 136-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Gill was eventually dismissed for 60 off 52 balls with nine fours and a six. England came back with quick wickets, including the dismissal of Virat Kohli for 5. Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel made quick 40-plus scores to all but kill the game as India cruised home.
India Form
Rohit Sharma finally found some form and fluency after a lean few months, which will bring India a lot of confidence going into the Champions Trophy.
Kohli has still not scored runs for a few months which will be an area of concern.
Apart from these factors, though, India seem to have quite a few questions answered ahead of the Champions Trophy.
"I really broke it down into pieces about how I wanted to bat," Rohit said. "It's a 50-over format, a little longer than T20 format and a little shorter than Test cricket obviously - a lot shorter than Test cricket.
"But obviously you still need to break it down and assess what you need to do at regular intervals and that is what I kept doing. It was important for a batter who gets set, needs to bat as deep as possible and that was my focus."
India Team News
Jasprit Bumrah will likely test his fitness for the Champions Trophy in the final ODI in Ahmedabad, which could mean Mohammad Shami gets a break after a few games in this series.
England Form
England will be disappointed with the way in which they’ve gone about this tour.
While Bazball has worked for a large part of the last few years, there is empirical evidence to suggest that it may not be the best method in conditions that are slow and sluggish, where caution during certain periods are advised against disciplined bowling units.
That has not transpired into much yet, which will hurt England after another series loss in subcontinent conditions.
England Team News
England will most likely not have Jacob Bethell for the Champions Trophy and potentially beyond after he suffered a left hamstring injury. After losing the series, there could be some changes for the final ODI in Ahmedabad.
"I'm pretty sure he's been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest," Jos Buttler said of Bethell. "That's really disappointing for him, obviously he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players so it's a shame that the injury is going to rule him out."
Verdict
England’s method has not worked in these conditions. Even in batting-friendly conditions in Cuttack, they lost regular wickets through the middle overs, which resulted in a lack of adequate firepower in the end overs.
There could be some dew in Ahmedabad, which could help the team batting second. That seems to be England’s only chance in this series.
