Ireland vs Afghanistan 3rd ODI Preview & Tips
Ireland got nowhere near their target of 300 to win the second ODI as their batting unit slumped to 207 all out in 33.4 overs.
Afghanistan battled against a late start time and tough conditions to put on an excellent score of 299/8 in the second ODI as they went 1-0 up in the series.
- Afghanistan have won their last seven ODI's against Ireland
Head To Head
Afghanistan have won eight of their last 10 ODI's against Ireland, with the latter winning the other two. Importantly, Afghanistan are looking to extend a run of seven successive wins over their opponents in the 50 over format.
Ireland Form
Ireland went into the second ODI against Afghanistan confident that they could challenge their opponents with bat and ball in a match restricted to 47 overs per side.
However, after seeing Afghanistan battle their way to 299/8, Ireland crumbled. At 96/1 after 14 overs, Ireland were right in the game. Unfortunately for the home side, wickets began to fall in clusters, with the spin of Rashid Khan particularly dangerous as he took 6/34 in a stunning display of bowling.
Their inability to put continued pressure on the rest of Afghanistan's bowlers meant that Khan could come in with no scoreboard pressure on his back, meaning he could focus on taking wickets, rather than worrying about leaking runs. The second ODI was a test in taking on a world class spinner, and it is a test they failed miserably.
While Ireland will look to learn the lessons of their failed run-chase in the second ODI, I do not back them to find the answers heading into the third ODI as they slump to another defeat.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan managed to put in a well-rounded batting and bowling display that saw them dismantle Ireland's threat with bat and ball.
Batting first, Afghanistan were good value for their score of 299/8 as they set Ireland an imposing target. While Ibrahim Zadran's 84 was an impressive show of committed batting, it was Rashid Khan that starred for the touring side as he took six wickets.
His ability to manipulate the ball saw him get Ireland in a real spin, with their best player leading them to a seventh consecutive win over Ireland in the ODI game. While victories on the road are rarely easy to come by, I back Afghanistan to surge to another win as they piece together yet another strong performance.
Verdict
I am backing Afghanistan to hand Ireland another defeat as the touring side go 2-0 up in their series.
