New Zealand vs India Preview

India and New Zealand will go head to head to decide the winner of the Champions Trophy. That is probably a fair outcome considering these two teams have been excellent right through the competition: India have remained unbeaten while New Zealand have lost to the only unbeaten team.

India were close to perfect in their previous outing against Australia. Despite having to chase in a tricky semi-final, it was Virat Kohli who stood up again in challenging conditions to score 84 in India’s chase of 265.

New Zealand were simply terrific against South Africa in their semi-final. Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra scored hundreds to set up New Zealand’s massive total of 362 for 6, which they defended comfortably in the end by 50 runs despite David Miller’s fighting hundred.

New Zealand Form

Kane Williamson has now posted two 80-plus scores in succession, which will please the NZ camp. The first of those scores is especially important because it came against India on a tricky pitch, which could easily be the case in the final.

Mitchell Santner was the other standout player in the semi-final as his 3 for 43 paved the way for a comfortable win. Along with Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips, Santner will be exceptionally important in the final.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand may consider bringing in an additional spinner for Kyle Jamieson or Will O’Rourke in conditions that could turn.

India Form

India have been exceptional this tournament even without Jasprit Bumrah. With Axar Patel batting at No. 5, they have had the luxury to push Ravindra Jadeja to No. 8, which makes them the most powerful batting team in this tournament.

KL Rahul came away with a 42 that put him back in form too. "I'm quite used to going up and down the order, so I'm just happy getting a chance to play in the middle and whatever role is given, I think it's really helped me understand my game a lot more and I've had to work on boundary-hitting a lot more,” he said.

India Team News

India should play the same team as the semi-final.

Verdict

Never discount this New Zealand team but India are looking too powerful in all respects. Even their spin-bowling depth has proved to be too much for their opponents, especially after the integration of Varun Chakravarthy into the team. New Zealand will certainly pose a tricky challenge to India but Dubai should favour its “home team”.
