New Zealand vs Pakistan 5th T20I Preview

New Zealand put in a clinical performance in Mount Maunganui to complete the series victory against Pakistan with a game to go. It was a wire-to-wire win as New Zealand started with aplomb and then bowled Pakistan out for 105 to complete a 115-run victory.

Finn Allen scored 50 off just 20 balls while Tim Seifert set the tone with 44 off 22 balls, with three fours and four sixes. Michael Bracewell played the perfect cameo with 46 off just 26 balls as New Zealand posted 220 for 6.

In response, Pakistan didn’t know what hit them as they were reduced quickly to 56 for 8. Jacob Duffy finished with figures of 4 for 20 while Zakary Foulkes managed 3 for 25. All New Zealand bowlers picked up at least one wicket each.

New Zealand’s bowlers had one bad game in Auckland. Apart from that day, their bowling has been decisive, using the conditions masterfully to extract the bounce and pace that these surfaces have, led by Duffy.

The batting has been terrific right through. Mark Chapman, Seifert and Allen have proved to be excellent as the top three while Michael Bracewell has now chipped in with several handy cameos from No. 7.

With the series won, New Zealand may consider some changes to their squad for the final match.

Pakistan will continue to look at their batting as an experiment. There are days that aggression will come off but that doesn’t work all the time. Pakistan, it seems, have decided to attack with the bat, which may not work on these bouncy pitches.

The bowling has been decent though, particularly with Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi picking up some wickets through the innings. Abrar Ahmed has been economical for the most part.

Even with a different New Zealand team, you get the feeling that there are several mismatches at play. One of them is New Zealand’s bowling depth against Pakistan’s aggression. If that style of play doesn’t come off, it can get ugly like it did in the previous match. That is not out of the question for the final match either, take New Zealand to win.
