New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Third ODI Preview
New Zealand completed the series win against Sri Lanka in the ODIs after dominating a rain-curtailed contest in Hamilton in the second match. New Zealand were asked to bat on a green surface after rain reduced the match to 37 overs.
Will Young and Rachin Ravindra made a quick start but it was Mark Chapman that added impetus to the innings with a breezy 62 off 52 balls with five fours and two sixes.
Ravindra carried on his impressive recent form with 79 off 63 balls. Cameos from Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner carried New Zealand to a respectable score of 255 for 9.
Sri Lanka didn’t manage much with the ball despite bowling-friendly conditions. Wanindu Hasaranga picked up two wickets but it was Maheesh Theekshana’s hat-trick that did plenty of damage towards the end of the innings. He finished with figures of 4 for 44.
Sri Lanka then got off to a horror start with the bat as they were quickly reduced to 22 for 4 before a rear-guard comeback from Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage brought back some respectability to their score.
Mendis fought with 64 off 66 balls but that was nowhere near enough as Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 142. Will O’Rourke was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 31.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand have continued their impressive form right through this home season so far, particularly in the white-ball formats. Even with a new-look, inexperienced lineup, New Zealand have looked excellent with both bat and ball.
There would be plenty of confidence and form in that New Zealand camp going into the final ODI in Auckland.
On the short straight boundaries, there will be a requirement to use the middle of the pitch and force batters to hit square of the wicket. That is where New Zealand’s fast bowlers will come into the game a lot more.
New Zealand Team News
With the series won, New Zealand may consider making some changes to their squad in a dead rubber.
Sri Lanka Form
Sri Lanka have lots of headaches going into the final ODI. They have been in this position already on this tour but came away from the final T20I with a consolation win.
To do that, there will be a desperation to fix some of their batting woes, which have been exacerbated against quality bowling.
There will be a sense of reliance on some of their most experienced batters, like Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka, who will have to build on starts for the visitors to have a chance.
Sri Lanka Team News
Like New Zealand, Sri Lanka may look to give more players a chance with the series done.
Verdict
Eden Park in Auckland has very short straight boundaries that make for easy hitting. Even mis-hits and partially-hit deliveries can travel the distance on this ground. Going over the sixes total is the best bet for the final ODI.
