Freiburg vs Aston Villa Preview & Tips

Freiburg outlasted Braga in an enthralling semi-final that saw the former secure a 4-3 aggregate win to secure their place in the Europa League final.

Aston Villa answered all of the questions Nottingham Forest asked of them as they bounced back from a 1-0 loss on the road with a commanding 4-0 win at Villa Park.

Head To Head

The 2026 Europa League final will be the first time the two sides have met in a competitive match.

Freiburg just about snuck into the top eight in the Europa League group stage after winning five of their opening eight. While they were four points behind Lyon at the summit, they have not let that stop them as they stormed to the final of the competition.

Wins over Genk (5-2 on aggregate), Celta Vigo (6-1) and Braga (4-3) has seen Freiburg beat a number of strong opponents. Clean sheets have been few and far between though, with Freiburg conceding in six of their last seven.

Against Aston Villa, I predict that Freiburg will struggle. If the English side can gain any momentum then Freiburg will find containing a team full of quality very difficult. While I back them to hit the back of the net against Villa, I predict that it will not be enough as they slump to defeat in the showpiece event.

Aston Villa Form

Aston Villa continue to impress in the Europa League, with Unai Emery’s side on course to secure a Champions League spot by winning Europe’s secondary competition.

In the group stage, Villa were able to secure seven wins and 21 points, only denied top spot by Lyon’s superior goal difference.

Since the group stage, Villa have been ruthless. A 3-0 aggregate win over Lille was followed by a crushing 7-1 win over Bologna. While they saw a nine-game winning run in Europe brought to an end via a tight 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, Villa stormed to a statement 4-0 win in the second-leg to secure their place in the final.

While Villa were beaten by Forest in the first-leg of their semi-final, they were able to romp to a big win when it mattered most. I expect more of the same in this one. While I do not back Villa to keep a clean sheet in this one, I back them to secure the win, with this enough to assure them of a place in the Champions League next season.
