Coco Gauff vs Elise Mertens Preview & Tips

Coco Gauff rallied well in her clash with Xinran Sun in the third round in Beijing as she notched a fighting 7-5 6-1 win.

Elise Mertens eventually beat Jelena Ostapenko in the last round as she won 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Gauff has only lost 14 times this season (W47)

The pair have met five times before, with Gauff winning every single meeting including the last three on hard courts.

Coco Gauff Form

Coco Gauff has looked in good form of late, winning in Cincinnati back in August before making it to the semi-final of the US Open where she was beaten 2-1 by Elena Rybakina.

At the Beijing Open, Gauff was able to beat Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in a 7-6 4-6 6-2 win before she eliminated Xinran Sun in the third round. In her third round win, Gauff managed to secure two breaks to one in the first set before roaring to a 6-1 win in the second set. Gauff was unplayable in the second set as she underlined her quality once again.

With 32 wins in 40 matches on hard courts this season, Gauff has been very good. She also boasts 47 wins in 61 matches in 2026. While Mertens has been in fairly good form, I do not see Gauff losing for the first time against her opponent.

Elise Mertens Form

Elise Mertens has not had it all her own way at the Beijing Open, but she has still managed to win both of her opening matches.

A 6-0 4-6 7-5 win over Katie Volynets in the second round was quickly followed by a 6-2 3-6 6-3 triumph over Jelena Ostapenko. While both wins were positive, she has found going on an extended run of victories tough having been knocked out in the third round at the US Open and quarter-final in Singapore.

More worrying is her form against Gauff. Five meetings have resulted in five defeats, and I predict that her woeful run against Gauff will continue as she slumps to a fourth-round exit.
