England vs India 1st ODI Preview & Tips - India to end losing run against England with ODI triumph

India are in need of a morale-boosting win after failing to secure a single victory over England across their five-game T20 series. 

India have won eight of their last 10 ODI's against England, with the English winning twice in this time. 

England were outstanding across their T20 series against India as they stormed to a 4-0 win to move to the summit of the men's T20 world rankings. 

Only denied a 5-0 win by the weather, England were ruthless, securing wins by four wickets, 125 runs, nine wickets and 56 runs. The home side continually showcased their brilliant pace-bowling attack along with a top-order that refused to score slowly. In truth, few sides in the world can keep up with England when they are in that sort of form, and it showed as they humiliated the T20 world champions. 

As good as they were in the T20 game, I expect a very different performance in their opening ODI. England have had real issues in the longer formats, losing seven of their last 10 Tests and, more importantly, losing six of their last 10 ODI's. While England have the players to put an opposition bowling unit to the sword, they have struggled to consistently build scores when there are more deliveries on offer. 

Despite Joe Root's presence in the side, England have been feast or famine with their run-scoring. I predict that they will struggle to transport their T20 form into the 50 over game as the struggles of their batting unit sees them go 1-0 down in the series. 

India arrive for the first ODI against England on the back of six consecutive defeats on their tour of the UK and Ireland. 

Their 2-0 T20 series loss to Ireland was an embarrassing start to the tour and it has been made worse with four insipid performances against England. While their hosts have been in inspired form, India's batting has been particularly bad, with the touring side unable to deal with England's pace bowlers. 

The inclusion of Virat Kohli in the ODI squad will give the touring side a boost. Kohli has only played three ODI's in 2026 but, with scores of 93, 23 and 124, he boasts an average of 80.00 this year and 58.72 across his career. 

With India desperately searching for a first win across formats since their ODI win over Afghanistan back on June 20, I back the touring side to finally get back to winning ways. This will likely come on the back of Kohli scoring well with the bat and their bowling unit making the most out of England's batting struggles in the longer formats.
