Ireland vs Afghanistan 2nd ODI Preview & Tips
Ireland were left hugely frustrated by the weather in the opening ODI as they were denied any chance at going 1-0 up in their five-game series against Afghanistan.
Like Ireland, Afghanistan were denied a chance to get out into the middle as the Irish summer saw no play possible in the first ODI.
- Ireland have lost their last six ODI's against Afghanistan
Head To Head
Afghanistan have won seven of their last 10 ODI's against Ireland, with the latter winning the other three.
Ireland Form
Ireland's hopes of winning the first ODI were dashed by the weather as their opening match in their five-game series was washed out.
Having failed to get out into the middle in midweek, Ireland will have to wait to try to bounce back from a humbling 197-run loss to the West Indies in their last ODI. It is worth noting that this series did sway one way and then the other, with Ireland beating their opponents by 124 runs in the game before.
Frustratingly, series that tilt back and forth are doing little to help Ireland's form. Indeed, across their last 10 they have lost seven times, with three wins coming in a poor run dating back to March 2024. The ODI format has not been one the Irish have consistently played in, with 10 matches across nearly two-and-a-half years illustrating this.
While Ireland have made big strides in the game, they are still a level below a team like Afghanistan, and I back the travelling side to showcase this in their next meeting.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan were the favourites for victory in the first ODI and will have seen their odds of winning the series shorten as the number of chances Ireland have to stun the touring side shrank.
While the tourists are the better of the two sides, they can take little for granted if they are to arrest a poor run of form in the 50 over format. Indeed, a trio of defeats to India may have seen Afghanistan take on one of the best sides, but they barely threw a punch as they lost by seven wickets, 170 runs and nine wickets.
Now, with the chance to hit the ground running in the second ODI, I back Afghanistan to show that their 3-0 loss to India was a flash in the pan against a brilliant opponent. With the series restricted to four matches, I predict that Afghanistan will get off to a good start with victory in the second ODI.
Verdict
I am backing Afghanistan to start as they mean to go on by downing Ireland in the second ODI.
