West Indies vs Sri Lanka 1st T20 Preview & Tips

The West Indies are looking to secure a first Twenty20 win since they hammered Zimbabwe by 107 runs at the World Cup back in February.

Like the West Indies, Sri Lanka are also looking for a first win since the World Cup, with nation slumping to four consecutive defeats.

In their last 10 meetings, Sri Lanka have won four times with the Windies winning the other six matches.

The West Indies have not played a huge amount of cricket following the T20 World Cup, with the side turning out for just one completed matches since they played their last tournament game against India back in March.

Since then, they have lost one ODI against Sri Lanka, with games two and three of the series rained off. The lack of cricket the pair were able to play was incredibly frustrating, with the weather having the biggest say of all.

In the T20 game, the West Indies have been fairly good. Their last 10 have resulted in six wins and four defeats, with the shortest format a place they have preferred of late. Against a Sri Lanka side that has lost their last four in the T20 game, the Windies will be confident.

Coming to a format in which they can really lean on their flair players with the bat, I predict a return to form for the home side as they build on six wins across their last 10 against their opponents in the 20 over game.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka’s recent run in the T20 format has not been particularly impressive, with nine defeats coming alongside four wins.

Indeed, their last four T20’s have ended in defeats to Zimbabwe (by six wickets), England (by 51 runs), New Zealand (by 61 runs) and Pakistan (by five runs), with three of those four defeats very heavy.

Their woes against the top sides have come from an inability to restrict the opposition with the ball and a batting unit that has not been able to consistently fire. The best sides will be able to weave together solid batting and bowling, but Sri Lanka have not been able to boast either consistently enough.

Travelling to take on a side that they have lost six of their last 10 T20’s against is a major concern. While each new series will bring with it renewed hopes, I do not see the travelling side going ahead in the series.
