Espanyol vs Real Madrid
Espanyol are looking to build on an impressive 3-0 win over Levante in their opening game of the season as they stormed up to second on the ladder. This win in their first competitive fixture was a welcome return to form after failing to win any of their previous four in pre-season. This run contained three draws and a 3-1 loss to English side Coventry as Espanyol failed to keep a single clean sheet. Their second fixture of the season sees them face a Real Madrid side that knows they have to start quickly. While Espanyol looked good in their opener, they were beaten twice to nil by Real last time out, and I predict more of the same in this one.
Real Madrid will begin a new competitive era under Jose Mourinho this weekend as they start their La Liga campaign on the road against Espanyol. In pre-season, Real have been good, beating Leganes, Ferencvaros, Deportivo La Coruna and Schalke, while they were held in a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina. Their last two matches have felt like more of a Mourinho result with a pair of clean sheets. While Real boast some of the best forwards in the game, I back their new manager to add a certain defensive solidity they have lacked as they beat Espanyol to nil for the third successive time.
Elche vs Barcelona
Elche's opening match of the season ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna. While away games in the competition are rarely simple, Elche will feel this was a chance to secure three points away form home pass them by. Across pre-season, Elche have proved tough to beat, drawing three times and winning twice. However, the quality of opponent across pre-season was nowhere near as high as it will get this week. Having lost their last 13 matches to Barca, I back Elche to slump to another defeat.
Barcelona will come into the new season looking to defend the La Liga crown they secured last term. While they were far too good for their opponents across the season, Real Madrid will arrive renewed, with a number of new faces and a new manager in Jose Mourinho. Starting well in the defence of a title is always key, and I back Barca to start with a win. Barcelona have won their last 13 against Elche, while they have seen over 2.5 goals in their last seven meetings, and I back the away side to win in an entertaining game.
Verdict
I am backing Real to beat Espanyol without conceding as Barcelona defeat Elche in a game that sees over 2.5 goals.
