Ipswich vs Liverpool
Ipswich arrive after a fairly good start to the new Premier League season. Their 2-1 win over Sunderland in their opener was an outstanding result before they were beaten 5-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. While conceding five goals was a damning realisation for their defence, they did at least take the lead in that game as they scored twice on the road. Many newly promoted teams find scoring and keeping the ball out of their own net tough. While Ipswich do fall into the latter after conceding six goals in two games, they have at least scored twice in both openers. Having beaten Sunderland in their last home game, I back Ipswich to frustrate a Liverpool side that have drawn their last two.
Liverpool have not been good enough this season, with their opening two matches both ending in 2-2 draws. Against Newcastle, the Reds had to come from 1-0 and 2-1 down to salvage a point. They then repeated the trick against Nottingham Forest, meaning the Reds are yet to take the lead this season. While I back them to score once again, I do not back them to keep a clean sheet as their wait for a win goes on.
Arsenal vs Chelsea
Arsenal have been excellent at the start of the new season, securing a pair of wins and clean sheets to begin their title defence in fine style. Their 3-0 win over Coventry on the opening night at the Emirates was one most saw coming, while their 1-0 win over Aston Villa came in a resolute performance against a stubborn host. Chelsea arrive having also won their opening two, although they are yet to keep a clean sheet in high scoring matches that have seen them score seven times and concede five goals. Arsenal will know that they are likely to breach a creaky Chelsea backline, but can they keep out the joint-top scorers in the competitions after two matches?
Chelsea have started their time under new manager Xabi Alonso with an exciting brand of attacking football that has seen them beat Fulham 3-2 and Brighton 4-3. While they have twice managed to outscore the opposition, the bubble will eventually burst, especially with better teams to come. The focus for the Blues will be on marrying a dangerous attack alongside a solid defence. Against an opponent they have lost their last three against, I back the Blues to slump to their first defeat of the season despite finding the back of the net once again.
Verdict
I am backing Liverpool's wait for a win to go on as Arsenal end Chelsea's winning run.
