Portugal vs Nigeria
Portugal are aiming to extend their unbeaten run across competitions to five matches as they head towards the World Cup this summer. Their 2-1 win over Chile in their last outing was a second consecutive win for the side after they beat the USA 2-1 back in April. As the favourites to top a group that contains Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia, Portugal will use their clash with Nigeria as the chance to finalise their starting XI ahead of the competition.
Nigeria saw their unbeaten run extended to six matches on the back of a battling 2-2 draw with Poland. Following on from wins over Zimbabwe (2-0) and Jamaica (3-0), their clash with a strong Polish side was a good workout. Frustratingly, when questions were asked of their defence, they crumbled, with the side conceding in both injury time periods in the first and second-half. Ultimately, a lack of anything to play for likely hurt Nigeria, and I back a summer that is bereft of a place at the World Cup will see intensity levels drop.
England vs Costa Rica
It was far from a vintage performance from England against New Zealand as they ground out a 1-0 win at the weekend. Harry Kane scored the winner in injury time of the first-half, but there was little else to celebrate as the nation struggled to breakdown their opponents. Positively, this win did end a run of two without a victory. England will now likely play close to their starting XI in the first-half at least, with this potentially seeing them finally rekindle their scoring form. With this the final chance for players to impress ahead of the World Cup, I am backing England to secure a win in a match that finally sees goals.
Costa Rica have struggled for positive performances in 2026, with a string of poor results seeing the side fail to win any of their last five games. Their 4-1 win over Nicaragua in October 2025 was followed by a loss to Haiti and a draw with Honduras the same year, while they have drawn with Jordan and lost to Iran and Colombia in their last three. If Costa Rica were heading towards the World Cup then I would back a low scoring game as the two nations try to ensure they are not beaten. However, Costa Rica have seen over 2.5 goals scored in their last three, and I back them to continue to struggle to keep the ball out of their own net.
Verdict
I am backing Portugal to ease past Nigeria as both sides find the back of the net while England beat Costa Rica in a match that sees over 2.5 goals scored.
