Background & Qualification

Bangladesh returned to the Asia Cup 2025 after qualifying through the AHF Cup earlier in the year.

It was another opportunity for the men’s hockey side to measure themselves against Asia’s best after a gap in high-level tournament play.

Group Stage Performance

Placed in Pool B with Malaysia, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei, Bangladesh had a mixed campaign. They started with a tough 4–1 defeat to Malaysia, where defensive lapses cost them heavily.

The team responded strongly in their second game, thrashing Chinese Taipei 8–3. The forwards combined well, and Bangladesh looked much more fluid in attack.

However, the earlier loss meant they finished third in the group with three points, just short of advancing to the Super4s.

What Went Wrong

  • Defensive fragility was a recurring issue, with too many soft goals conceded.
  • Struggles against top-tier opponents like Malaysia showed the gap with Asia’s best.
  • Inconsistency prevented them from building momentum across matches.

Positives to Build On

  • The win over Chinese Taipei showed Bangladesh’s attacking strength and creativity.
  • The squad displayed resilience by bouncing back after the opening defeat.
  • Exposure to strong Asian opponents gives the team experience for future qualification campaigns.

Next Challenge: Kazakhstan in the 5–8th Place Playoffs

Although the Super4s are out of reach, Bangladesh still have fixtures to play in the classification stage. On September 4, they will face Kazakhstan in the 5–8th place semi-finals. This match offers an opportunity to finish the tournament on a strong note and test themselves against a side closer to their level.

A win would put Bangladesh in contention for 5th place, which would represent a respectable finish given the strength of their group.
