Elise Mertens was able to enjoy a walkover in the last round as Barbora Krejcikova withdrew from the Singapore Open.

Maja Chwalinska enjoyed as close to a walkover as she could get without missing the match entirely as she hammered Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-0 6-1.

The pair have met once before, with Chwalinska winning 6-4 6-0 at the French Open back in May.

Elise Mertens will be very fresh heading into the third round of the Singapore Open after avoiding taking to the court since the third round of the US Open back on September 5.

Her walkover against Barbora Krejcikova means she will not be fatigued, but a lack of match time will likely have an impact on her heading into this one. While her opponent has played twice already, she will have her eye in when it comes to how she is serving or hitting the ball in open play.

Fortunately for Mertens is the quality she has showcased across her career. Currently ranked 19th in the world, Mertens boasts 30 wins in 48 matches this season and 513 wins and 298 defeats across her career. While I do not see this being a particularly simple win, I do back Mertens to move into the next round.

Maja Chwalinska Form

Maja Chwalinska has been outstanding at the Singapore Open in 2026 as she has set up her clash with Mertens without dropping a set.

A 6-4 6-2 win over Rebecca Sramkova in the first round was quickly followed by a sensational 6-0 6-1 win over Oleksandra Oliynykova. In that match, Chwalinska took six consecutive games in the first set before repeating the trick in the second set. The one blot on her copybook was a surprising loss on serve in the second to see her go 1-0 down.

When on form, Chwalinska is very tough to stop and will give most opponents issues. However, against Mertens, she will get little incentive to attack. Her opponent will be very fresh coming into her first outing in a month and I back Chwalinska to slump to a defeat despite taking a set.
