Mjallby vs Salzburg
Mjallby were in need of a big performance in their last game, and that is exactly what they got as they secured a 4-3 win over Sirius. This triumph ended a three-game losing run and a five-game winless run across competitions, with Mjallby in awful form. While their triumph over Sirius was a timely return to winning ways, they are still very much up against it in both the home leg of their clash and across the two-legged tie. If they are to progress from the play-offs then a triumph will likely be built on a win at home, but I do not back Mjallby to secure the win they need.
Salzburg just about made it past a stubborn Pafos side in the last round as they secured a 4-3 aggregate triumph. Their 1-0 win at home proved the difference as the pair played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the second-leg. This draw has since been followed by a 3-0 away win over Tirol in the league, with Salzburg arriving on the back of seven games without a defeat, with this run featuring five wins. It is interesting to note that while Salzburg have won four of the five on the road across this run, they have conceded in three of these games, showing their defence has often struggled to shoulder the pressure the opposition have been able to apply.
Benfica vs Aarhus
Benfica have been able to impress of late, with their last five matches ending without defeat. In this time, Benfica have won three matches, while they have drawn the other two. All three of these wins have been at home, with an aggregate score of 16-2 in these three games showing they have been very strong. Their opponents arrive in shaky form, and I back Benfica to do a similar job to the one they did against Hearts. In the last round, Benfica hammered their opponents 6-1 at home before securing a 1-1 draw on the road. With Benfica the better of the two sides, I back the home team to head into the second-leg with a lead.
Aarhus have struggled of late, with a single win coming across their last four matches. A draw and a win have come alongside two defeats in their last two outings. While their last two defeats saw them arrive as the underdogs, Aarhus will still be very disappointed to have failed to get back to winning ways. Indeed, their 4-0 loss to Sabah Baku will have Benfica taking not of their weaknesses at the back. The focus in the first-leg will likely be on ensuring they are still in the game at the start of the second-leg, and this may work against them, especially if they give Benfica too much time and space.
Verdict
I am backing Salzburg to secure the lead over Mjallby as Benfica beat Aarhus in a high-scoring game.
