Yibing Wu vs Carlos Alcaraz Preview & Tips

Yibing Wu was outstanding in the second round of the US Open as he surged past James Duckworth in a 7-5 6-3 6-1 victory.

Carlos Alcaraz came back from a set down as he secured a battling 3-1 win over Jaime Faria.

  • Alcaraz has won 144 of his 175 on hard courts across his career (L31)

Head To Head

The pair have only met once before, with Alcaraz securing a 7-6 6-3 win in Shanghai back in 2024.

Yibing Wu Form

Yibing Wu is yet to drop a set at the US Open after surging to a pair of simple wins over Adam Walton and James Duckworth.

Against Duckworth, Wu was made to wait until late in the first set before he got his chance as he broke his opponent to go 6-5 up. From there, Duckworth's resolve stuttered as he slumped to 6-3 6-1 scores in the second and third set respectively.

Wu put on show his ability to stay disciplined and wait for a chance to break in the first set before roaring away in the second and third sets. However, the quality of Alcaraz is such that Wu will have to be even better if he is to take a set, let alone win the match. While he will hope to build on two good wins, I predict that this will be the end of the line for him at the US Open in 2026.

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Carlos Alcaraz has marked his return from injury with a pair of wins at the US Open over Roman Safiullin and Jaime Faria.

While his win over Safiullin came in a 6-4 6-4 6-4 triumph, he was made to sweat in the second round as he lost the first set to Faria 6-4. Positively for Alcaraz, the adversity seemed to spur him on as he did not drop a game in the second set before completing the win by securing scores of 6-3 6-2 in the third and fourth sets respectively.

Alcaraz may have dropped the first set in the second round, but he looked formidable in the remainder of the clash. I back him to notch a 20th win in 22 hard court matches this season as he wins 3-0.

Verdict

I am backing Alcaraz to win 3-0 as he gets back to winning in straight sets.
