Ben Shelton vs Carlos Alcaraz Preview & Tips

Ben Shelton was excellent in his last match as he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 6-3 6-4 to secure his shot at eliminating the reigning US Open champion in the quarter-finals.

Carlos Alcaraz eased past Tommy Paul in the fourth round as he made it successive 3-0 wins at the US Open.

  • Alcaraz has won 26 of his 29 matches this season (L3)

Head To Head

Carlos Alcaraz has won his three previous matches against Ben Shelton.

Ben Shelton Form

Ben Shelton has looked good at the US Open in 2026 after only dropping three sets across his opening four matches.

Interestingly, his easiest win of the campaign so far came against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round. In both the first and third sets Shelton was able to break his opponent early and did not look back, while he had to bide his time before breaking Tsitsipas to go 4-2 up in the second set.

While Shelton has been in good form at the US Open in 2026, he has not been perfect across the season. Indeed, 13 defeats in 50 matches is a disappointing return, and while I back him to take a set from Alcaraz like he did at the French Open in their last meeting in 2025, I do not see him getting close to beating Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Carlos Alcaraz was given a real test in the second round by Jaime Faria, but has since cruised to a pair of easy wins over Yibing Wu and Tommy Paul.

His clash against Paul was one in which Alcaraz had to wait for his moment before breaking his opponent to take the first set 6-4. This seemed to really break Paul's resolve as he was broken twice in the second set early-on before also being broken early in the third set.

Alcaraz currently boasts 26 wins in 29 matches this season with 21 of these victories coming on hard courts. The quarter-finals will likely see Alcaraz provided with his biggest test yet, but I do not see him falling here as he moves into the semi-finals on the back of a 3-1 win.

Verdict

I am backing Alcaraz to secure a 3-1 win over Shelton as he edges closer to defending his US Open crown.
