Daniil Medvedev vs Valentin Royer Preview & Tips

Daniil Medvedev returns to the court for the first time since a frustrating 3-0 loss to Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round of the US Open.

Valentin Royer edged past Adam Walton in the first round of the Hangzhou Open as he secured a 6-3 6-4 triumph.

Medvedev has won 290 times on hard courts across his career (L99)

This will be the first time the pair have met in a competitive tennis match.

Daniil Medvedev Form

Daniil Medvedev has been enduring an inconsistent season in 2026 after winning 34 of his 50 matches.

His run at the final Grand Slam of the season saw Medvedev make a blistering start as he won in straight sets in each of the first three rounds at the US Open. However, he was blown away by Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round as he was given a taste of his own medicine in a 3-0 loss.

This defeat was a fifth loss across his last 10 matches, with Medvedev struggling for consistency. The Hangzhou Open constitutes a very good chance to end this inconsistency, and Medvedev should fancy himself against an opponent that has lost 26 of his 49 matches this season.

While Medvedev has had the propensity to lose matches this season, I do not see this happening in this match.

Valentin Royer Form

Valentin Royer may head into his clash with Medvedev on the back of a six wins in seven, but he will have to take his level of performance up a notch if he is to stun his opponent in the second round.

In the first round of the Hangzhou Open, Royer surged past Adam Walton in an impressive performance. Both players looked well matched, but it was Royer that managed to take two of the seven break points on offer to him in comparison to Walton failing to take any of the four on offer to him.

While breaking Walton twice was enough on the day, missing out on five break points is a worry. Against Medvedev, Royer will need to take any chances that are presented to him. While he will have his chances in the match, I do not back him to extend his impressive run with another win.
